I doubt that you remember me. Back in 2001, I was in a special segment with you on The Other Half. I was chosen out of the audience to have a "psychic connection" with you, thanks to a mentalist that was on the show. I cannot remember his name, but I am thankful to him for introducing me to you. I think about that day often, and how wonderful it was to meet you and do that segment with you.
When I heard of your stroke a few years ago, I was so upset. The news reminded me of when I found out that my grandfather (who passed away in 1999) was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. I may have even shed a few tears for you and your family, knowing how hard it is to deal with an event like a stroke, or any other illness for that matter.
On New Year's Eve 2009, my husband said something to be about New Year's Rockin' Eve. I remembered watching Ryan Seacrest for 2008, and thought that he was doing the countdown again for 2009. I was stunned to see you sitting behind a desk, encouraging everyone to do the countdown with you. You still look like Dick Clark-- Only, you wear a ton of makeup and you don't look as though you are enjoying life the way you were less than a decade ago.
While you have recovered from your stroke and have your faculties about you, you are slurring your words. I don't know if anyone pointed that out to you, but it was pretty difficult to understand you. And then you said the numbers of the countdown incorrectly. I'm sure people placated you by saying something to the effect of, "Oh, don't worry about it! I doubt anyone noticed." Mr. Clark, I am sorry to say, we all noticed. I felt so, so sad. Heartbroken, even.
It is time to fully retire. You built an empire. You are an iconic American figure. You are a legend. Please, please, please keep it that way. The teenagers of today that watch New Year's Rockin' Eve don't remember you from American Bandstand or even The Other Half. Their parents or even grandparents have to explain to them who you are and why you are so important.
I know how hard it is to let go of the past, Mr. Clark. When you let go of the past, you feel as though you lose a part of your life. That isn't the case, though. You are already a part of history. You don't have to prove yourself anymore. You shouldn't have to-- Look at everything you have done throughout your life.
You are the Dick Clark. There isn't anyone who can replace you. To be honest, I don't think that there is anyone that would even want to attempt to fill your shoes. Take pride in that. I have an incredible amount of respect for you. Please don't become a joke: The man that couldn't let go of New Year's. Step down. Be proud. Be happy.
Very Truly Yours,
Candice Cain
