A Pet Pomeranian

Rielle
The Pomeranian is a very popular dog breed. No doubt because of it's small size and royal appearance! Most even have a princely demeanor! A way of carrying them-selves that says "I am spoiled and pampered!" This is one of the few breeds where all colors and mixes of colors are allowed in the breed standard. Most common are browns and blacks, whites, reds or orange. This dog does shed as they have two coats. Brushing them at least every week will cut down on shedding. Don't over brush them, it can damage their coats. Regular dental care is important to this breed. They are prone to tooth loss. Feed dry food, this is better for their teeth. This is definitely a dog that will be your baby and love to be with you. The full grown pom will be between 8 and 11 inches and weigh only 3-7 pounds. They will be very content to couch potato with you. The Pom used to be a much larger dog, but was gradually bred down to a smaller and smaller size. He started out at around 30 pounds!

This dog may become temperamental around small children that may not handle them in an appropriate way. This dog does not require a lot of walking and will do well in even a small apartment. You must be firm with this dog when training. This little guy can be a bit stubborn. He is, however, eager to learn new things. Be firm with him but still loving. The pom will be rather protective but not to the point of clinginess. Poms possess a high energy level and a true zest for life. They can be notorious barkers, but with a strong owner who shows dominance this can be corrected if it is a problem.

The pom thinks he is a much bigger dog and may show aggression towards other, larger dogs. Keep him on a leash in public and around the neighborhood else your Pom may go charging at another dog and bite of more than he can chew!

Some say this dog is the most independent of all in the toy breed but because of his small size he is prone to develop small dog syndrome, and believe he is the pack leader. He will show human behaviors such as jealousy, anger and dominance. He can tend to be temperamental and develop separation anxiety. He may even become snappish. I have a toy poodle who is afflicted with this syndrome and I see no end in sight!. Normally Poms are very friendly and easy to get along with.

Poms have a few health concerns, including likely c-sections for small females. A healthy pom may live up to 15 years. The Pom originated in Europe in Pomerania. The Pom has been high on the list of most popular dog breeds for many years.
