A Piece of My Mind

Which Piece Will it Be?

David A. Reinstein, LCSW
When we were kids
And there was one
Candy bar
That had to be shared
Between two of us -
One would break it
And the other would
Choose.
One created the pieces,
The other had
First picks
On which piece
Was theirs.
This always seemed
Fair to both kids.

Choosing a piece
Of anything
Is best done by
The 'other.'
But there is not
Always
An other.
When we choose
A piece of our mind
To work with,
Share
Or focus on
We cannot ask someone else
To break it half
So that we can have first picks
On which piece
To go to.
The pieces remain connected
But the mind
Simply
Can not be used
All at once.
It is too vast
And complex
To consider-
Let alone,
To share.

Pieces are never
Entirely equal,
Nor equally
Nourishing,
Entertaining
Or worthwhile.
But the jig-saw puzzle
Of which each is part
Would collapse
Were one
Seemingly insignificant piece
Missing.

Splitting a Milky Way was easy.
Choosing which
Piece of mind
To give someone -
Now THAT'S hard.

The picture is of a miniature model of a human brain in the hand of a friend... I sometimes use it at the office to explain how parts of the brain work.

Love the poem, as I do all your work. I am a little taken aback with the photo ;-)
