A Poem a Day Will Keep the Doctor Away

Louisa Burgess
Something interesting I have found
unexpected and profound

Writing poetry good and bad
helps my head from feeling sad

A haiku here and there
makes me feel that life is fair

Rhyming or not a little ditty
can help me feel no pity

Free verse flows from my fingers
showing me that love lingers

A serious or flighty verse
keeps my fingers from my purse

Making sense or showing little
doesn't matter when in a pickle

Observations of natural beauty
have a way of kicking my patootie

Mental health not withstanding
this poem should now be ending

Just remember what I say here
a poem is way better than a beer

I write this down for all to know
whether sunny or knee deep in snow

Write a poem a day
it keeps the doctor away!

    I completely agree!

I have to agree.. I know when I am mad, or upset about smething that I may not want to talk about I will start to write and it always ends up in poem form. I never would dream of publishing any of them on AC though.. they are like secrets. lol!

This piece is so cute and SO TRUE! I find my best poetry when I'm down and out. My happy poetry is a bit boring. But when I write, I feel better too.

hey, this is so true :D

This is how I feel about being creative. I have to either write, take photographs, and/or create something using arts and crafts everyday to feel like myself.

Louisa, you are so right! Poetry has helped me express my feelings when I had no one to talk to about them. When pain and tragedy strikes, we have a God-given gift to purge ourselves of that pain in a constructive way. Keep writing, dear poet.
