A Poem for Katy (Who Made My House a Home)

A Poem in Tribute to My 15-year-old Dog

Kathryn E. Darden
In 1995 I bought my dream house on a hillside with a lovely view of the Nashville hills. I inadvertently ended up buying a small papillon puppy in a pet store a month later, and my life was changed for the better. Miss Katy has made my house my home.

A Poem for Katy

In '95 I bought a house built on a steep hillside,
Green vistas for a weary soul--a safe place to abide.
But though my house was beautiful, it was not yet my home.
The silent halls reminded me that I lived all alone.

A sweet face in a pet store watching every move I made,
The crafty clerk removed the pup as I tried to evade.
The tiny dog ran straight to me and begged to be picked up.
Four hours passed before I left the store with my new pup.

List not for me the reasons not to buy a pet store pup--
I knew them all and spent four hours trying to put her up.
But she refused to leave my side, and so I paid her price.
I thought that I had bought a dog, but I had changed my life.

At seven pounds she wasn't big except for her big heart--
A bond was forged ensuring that we never were apart.
I thought that I now owned a dog; through time I came to see
That I owned Katy somewhat less than Katy now owned me.

Intelligence and spirit with a quiet, gentle soul,
Good-natured and fun-loving girl--she quite reversed our roles.
The years passed and to my chagrin I finally came to see,
I had not trained her half as much as Katy had trained me.

For 15 years I've owned a house and been owned by a dog.
A small seven-pound papillon became my little rock.
I've always had her with me, by my side, never alone.
In '95 I bought a house. Katy made it my home.
