A Poem for a Very Special Lady

Rushelle O'Shea
My mother is an amazing woman. Mind you, as a child, I didn't always appreciate all the wonderful things she did for me or all the sacrifices she made. Sometimes, I think one of the biggest parts of growing up is that moment when you look back on all those lessons your parents taught you, and it all just suddenly seems to click into place.

Take some time between now and Mother's Day to reflect back on the very special gift that your mother gave to you.

My Poem for Mother's Day:

When I was growing up, learning life's necessities
She was the special lady to always kiss my injured knees,
She granted me sage advice, even when I didn't want to hear
And when I needed someone to listen, she always lent an ear
She put up with my mood swings and my eccentricities
She taught me not to slurp my soup and always to say, "Please."
Despite pockets full of worms and a dozen garter snakes,
She tried to be supportive of the choices that I'd make.
She would offer me suggestions and, yes, sometimes we would fight
Like when I was being irresponsible and tried to stay out all night
A firm hand, some tough love and rules I should obey
I may have balked back then, but I'm thankful now, today.
She brought me up to be honest, that I should never tell a lie
And she taught me to be strong, rather than quick to give in or cry.
And while the lessons were often tough and sometimes a bitter pill,
I find myself remembering them and following them still.
While as a child we seldom appreciate our mother's love, so kind
As we mature, we learn that this wisdom is a very special find
So to mothers, throughout the world, and to my very own I say:
We love you and appreciate you. Happy Mother's Day!
