A Positive Attitude Leads to Positive Results

The Power of Do

C.E. Brassel
We have all heard of countless occasions to "try our best" or "do the best that you can". But is this really acceptable or are we facilitating an atmosphere of mediocrity and failure? Why does trying not really ever work? Allowing someone to "try" is allowing them an escape route, a route to excuses, and eventually a route to failure.

For example, let us assume you tell everyone that you are going to "try" to climb a mountain. And now let us assume that all you did in that endeavor was to buy hiking boots. You "tried" didn't you? You made an attempt buy purchasing the boots. And now you can use every excuse out available for not climbing the mountain: "I am afraid of heights", "My legs were cramping", "I don't do well in the cold" and hundreds of others. But, you see, you did "try" because you bought the boots. The only way for someone to claim that you did not try is if you did absolutely nothing at all but say "I am going to climb a mountain".

There is a great old adage that states: "You don't try, you do!" What an incredibly powerful and empowering statement. This allows people everywhere to truly be whatever they want to be! I tell all me students that our goal on the tennis court is perfection. Now you may be thinking, "that's impossible" or "he's crazy, nobody is perfect". True. But just imagine how good you will be if you fall just short of perfection.

When you set a goal, it is only truly done when you accomplish it. By judging your success of that goal by either accomplishing it or not leaves you no room for excuses. With this line of thinking, you can rest assured each night that you truly did your best and you gave it everything you could. That is true success! If you honestly do your best, give it a hundred and ten percent and you are still a C student in math, then at least now you know that you are truly an average math student.

Perfection, true perfection, is giving everything you have. Win or loss, if you put forth all the effort you possibly can, then you know for a fact that you finally did "try" your best. You will have finally reached perfection. The power of do is a powerful and wonderful way to live. Besides, the only reason everyone says you cannot be perfect is because no one has done it yet. So be the first!
