A Poster Board Craft Project for Children

NANCY CZERWINSKI
I love this craft project. It's a project that will work with any age group. I did this project with a group of 4 year olds. Start with a large poster board for each child. Poster boards come in all different colors. A fun idea is to let each child pick the color poster board that they like. You will need glue sticks for this project. Save all your old magazines for this fun project.

One night I sat up late cutting out every flower, sun and house I could find in magazines. I put them in a shoe box lid and set them aside for our project.

I cleaned off the kitchen table and told the children to sit around the table. They were very excited. I find that little ones love art projects. I love doing craft projects. I think I get as excited as they do.

I placed the pictures in the middle of the table. I told the children they could pick any pictures they wanted from the pile. I showed them how to use the glue sticks. The easiest way to use the glue sticks is to have the children put a little glue on the poster board and then attach their picture in the spot where they put the glue. This is because the pictures that I cut out of the magazines are very thin. There is the possibility that they could tear. It's so much easier to put the glue on the poster board and then place the picture.

Tell each child to think about who they would like to give their art work to. They usually know right away who will receive their art work. Sometimes it's mom and sometimes it's dad. It's fun to listen to them tell you who will be getting the picture.

I would post some of our poster boards but the children took them home. The next time we do one of these projects I'm going to take some pictures.

As I was observing the children doing their art projects I found that I was learning more about each of the children. Some favored the flowers and some looked for houses. The little ones have distinct personalities at a young age and they know what they like.

If you should get a chance to do an art project with a young child I think you will enjoy this craft project as much as I did.

This project would also work with photocopies of family pictures. I think the sky is the limit with what you can do with this project. I have found that children are very creative. Enjoy!

You can learn so much about each child, just by doing a project with them. It helps bring out their creativity, which is so important. Great idea!
