A Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Great Experiences of Life

Shirley A Mandel
Lord,
there's a little something
that I need to thank you for,
something I forgot.

I thank you
for the many and varied experiences of life.

I thank you
that I got to march
with the women of the Army Corps,
and for the chance to serve
and to give.

I thank you
for the wedding, Lord,
and the long train rides
up the east coast
to go home for Christmas.

I thank you
for the experience of writing a poem
and winning first prize in a poetry contest.

I thank you
for being able to pass
successfully through the
halls of higher learning
and for graduation day.

I thank you
for answered prayers, Lord.

But most of all
I thank you
for my encounter with Christ
in the privacy
of the mind of a teenage girl.

I thank you
for all my experiences, Lord,
great and small,
painful and pleasant,
easy and difficult.

I thank you
for all that I've learned.

Being thankful for even the bad times is sometimes hard to do, but everything makes us stronger and gives us character. Well done.
