A Psychiatrist Gives Advice for Our President: Ouch! - There Are No Holds Barred

Dr. Ablow's Analysis of the 2011 President's State of the Union Address

R.C. Johnson
This has got to make the White House unhappy! Dr. Keith Ablow published a pretty tough analysis on 1/27/11 of what he said he personally saw and heard during President Obama's recent State of the Union Address.

I am not going to pick apart the article and analyze Dr. Ablow's analysis. If you are interested in what he had to say, you can read the article for yourself and come up with your own conclusions regarding Dr. Ablow's viewpoint.

This article will be hated or loved - with few people in the middle on the analysis made by Dr. Ablow.

Dr. Keith Ablow is a psychiatrist and member of the Fox News Medical A-Team. He is also a New York Times best-selling author, and co-author, with Glenn Beck, of the upcoming book "The 7: Seven Wonders that Will Change Your Life."

[See: a book review of the upcoming book, written by Albin Sadar, "The Washington Times," and published 1/21/11: BOOK REVIEW : 'The 7']

That association by Dr. Ablow with Glenn Beck along with commentary made by Dr. Ablow in his contributor role on Fox News "probably" places this well-known psychiatrist on the conservative rather than liberal side of the political spectrum.

Some information regarding Dr. Keith Ablow

On his website, Dr. Ablow's bio elicits this information:

Dr. Ablow characterizes himself as author, TV personality & human behavior expert.

Some bio excerpts:"... contributing editor for Good Housekeeping and Men's Fitness, and repeat Oprah guest. He has earned the title, "America's Psychiatrist" by helping millions of people take control of their lives by understanding the patterns they've developed that are firmly rooted in the past.

"... Dr. Ablow graduated from Brown University and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and is on the faculty of New England Medical Center in Boston. In addition to his best-selling work of non-fiction, Inside the Mind of Scott Peterson, he is the author of six bestselling crime novels, all of which feature a forensic psychiatrist who solves mysteries beyond the grasp of other investigators.

"Whatever the forum, Dr. Ablow's message is always the same: You can't outdistance your past. The truth always wins. And you can be a far more powerful person the moment you embrace it."

A media excerpt from Dr. Ablow's website: " Dr. Keith Ablow began his media career as a reporter for Newsweek and a freelancer for the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun and soon moved on to being a medical editor and producer for Lifetime Medical Television in New York and Los Angeles."

My thoughts

Dr. Keith Ablow is a well-recognized and significant individual in the field of health. He seems to love forensic science and analyzing human behavior; I would imagine that because of this type of background, an analysis by him of President Obama's presentation, mannerisms, content and entire State of the Union Address would seem to be in keeping with the type of analysis that he does on a frequent basis.

Dr. Ablow has certainly opened the door for criticism of himself and even ridicule by writing such a negative article about our President. That he might receive criticism was likely anticipated by this long-time psychiatrist, writer and commentator.

I don't know if this article by Dr. Ablow will influence other people's opinions one way or the other regarding the 2011 President's Address to the Nation or about President Obama himself, because opinions pro and con are already very deep-seated by people of all political persuasions. But clearly it isn't a flattering view of the President, what he stands for, and his agenda going forward.

I personally believe that all citizens need to evaluate such a speech as President Obama's Address for themselves. What Dr. Ablow writes is interesting, but hardly the final word on either President Obama or on his Address to the Nation. This article reflects Dr. Ablow's opinion. I reserve the right to make my own judgments, and I did that as I watched the speech.

This type of article does underscore our freedom in this country to speak or write negatively about our elected officials. Dr. Ablow chose to write an unflattering article about President Obama which was published on the internet. The article will be cheered or scorned depending on the viewpoint of the reader, be archived and then largely forgotten as happens with opinion pieces.

However, Dr. Keith Ablow will not be hauled off to prison for writing such an article as might easily happen in a country that is not a republic as is the United States of America. Whether you are a left, center or right-leaning individual, that fact should be considered as a very positive factor for living in our nation.

Without people like Dr. Keith Ablow , freedom of speech would be an unused privilege. Sometimes the truth hurts, but the truth should be told. Good article.

I read Dr. Ablow's article when it first appeared on the Fox News site... I'm sure he is now being vilified by those who think President Obama can do no wrong. Actually, some of what the good doctor wrote makes sense to me.

    Thanks RC!

I did as you did, made my own opinion as I watched the president address the nation. The good doctor's opinion may be professionally motivated, but that doesn't make him more correct. This was a fun read btw.

Thanks. I just miss the good old days before commentators. It's always easier to be an armchair quarterback than to get into the game.
