A Push in the "Write" Direction

Ideas to Throw at Your Blank Screen

Christine Senter
There will be days when you will have a million ideas as to what to write about. However, there will be days when the ideas just won't manifest. No matter how hard you brainstorm, the lightning bolts of wisdom are few and far between. For those occasions, it sometimes helps to seek outside assistance.

Here are a few ideas that might get your keyboard jumping.

Society

* World Marriage Customs
Look at the way different diverse cultures prepare for weddings, or what type of rituals they go through before the marriage takes place. Maybe write an article on cultures that have practiced the same marriage ceremonies for hundreds or thousands of years.

*Socializing Online
This topic could be about online dating, reuniting with lost friends, or even specialized forums that are based around certain groups of people. Write about starting an online newsgroup or how to find a site for mothers of twins.

*Volunteering
Talk about the different places to volunteer or maybe what it takes to be a highly recommended volunteer. Examine different ways of helping in a community or about the organizations you've worked with.

*Fashion Trends
Some ideas you might try in this subject could be who's new in the world of fashion or maybe who's fashion sense has lasted the longest. You could discuss the different designers or the latest fly-by-night fads.

*Shopping
Instead of just talking about the latest toys and electronic gadgets, look for ideas about finding unique gifts. Write an article about great buys at a flea market or local antique shops. If you shop online, you might write about the best and/or worst places.

Entertainment

*Parties
If this is your forte, the possibilities are endless. Write about how to theme parties or how to throw a party for an 8 year old on a budget. How about writing an article on how to throw a New Year's party that will be remembered throughout the rest of the year?

*Business Associates
If you deal with clients from out of town, write about the different ways of keeping them entertained while they're in your area. You could talk about the best places to take them to dinner or even how to deduct your business outings from your taxes.

*Music
Everybody has their favorite type of music and which songs they believe to be the best, but how about writing an article about a certain group's concerts? Discuss different options on how to find that rare album for your collection, or even the best ways to preserve an album collection.

*Freebies
If you've got places in your area that are free to attend, why not tell the world about them? Offer ideas on how to get free meals or movie tickets, that won't get you thrown in jail, or write about which deals are truly free and which ones will cost your readers in the end.

*Visual Stimuli
You might write an article about the best and/or worst movies for children, or television shows for teens. How about writing about your community theater groups, or if you've been to several different theaters, why not write about which ones you'd recommend to others and why?

Holidays

*Christmas
Rather than just go with the usual ideas for this International holiday, why not write about the way different regions celebrate it? Write up a guide on where to buy the best ornaments or a how-to piece on how to make your own decorations.

*Regional Holidays
Talk about the lesser known celebrations that happen in and around your area. Offer tips on how to plan for a local celebration or write about how the festivals are put together and what all needs to be done in order for them to be successful.

*National Holiday
Write an article about how your culture pays tribute to their heroes or how your nation celebrates its independence. Maybe offer ideas on how to prepare the custom dishes of your heritage or write about how these customs came to pass.

*Family
Discuss different ways to involve the whole family in preparing for a holiday. You might write about ways of getting the entire family together or how to create the perfect pictures for your Christmas card with your digital camera.

*Food
Write about the varieties of dishes a person could serve at their holiday meal or how to select the best main dish for the occasion. Offer ideas on how to decorate the table without spending a ton of money or the best ways to send perishable food items through the mail.

Travel

*Honyemoons
Write about the best and/or worst honeymoon destinations or maybe about the most unusual destinations. How about writing about the most romantic hotels? You could even write an article about which resorts offer the best deals for newlyweds.

*Kids
Write about the best ways to keep children occupied during a car trip or offer tips on dealing with a fussy baby on an airplane. Maybe write about kid friendly resorts or amusement parks. If you've got more than 2 children, you might discuss ways of keeping several children happy while on vacation.

*Destinations
Talk about some of the more interesting places you've been or the best kept secrets of a certain region. Give tips on getting the best deals on tour packages or which travel agents go out of their way to accommodate their customers.

*Hotels
Write reviews on the different hotels you've stayed in or write a piece on a certain hotel and talk about its good and bad qualities. You might try writing about which times of the year to get the best deals and with which hotel.

*Animals
Talk about how to keep your pet comfortable during an RV trip or which travel kennel works the best. Maybe write about which hotels allow pets or the pros and cons of leaving a pet behind while the family goes on vacation.
