A Quick Guide to the Different Types of Aromatherapy Diffusion Methods

In the world of aromatherapy, essential oils must be distributed throughout the environment. This process is commonly referred to as diffusion. There are a wide array of ways in which essential oils can be diffused. Surprisingly, many of those ways include items that you probably have sitting around your home. To diffuse these oils, commercial solutions must be used. These solutions have been created for this purpose and are readily available for purchase.

One very popular option is a terra cotta lamp ring. This lamp ring fits snugly over the top of a light bulb that is in a lamp. The lamp ring contains a special groove into which the essential oils are placed. When the lamp is turned on, the heat from the bulb heats the ring and therefore diffuses the essential oils placed inside, releasing them into the atmosphere.

Another option composed of terra cotta is the terra cotta pot. No heat is required for this method. Simply pour the essential oils into the pot. When the fragrance is desired, a quick removal of the pots cork will introduce the delightful fragrance into the air.

Candle diffusers are another great way to enjoy the fragrant aroma of essential oils in your home. The process is quite simple; a tray filled with essential oil and a small candle is lit and placed underneath. As the oil warms, the scent is released into the air. It is important to note however, that with any diffuser where heat is utilized, the oil may begin to degrade in potency.

The next option is fan diffusers. These machines do not require any heat source. Simply allow an absorbent pad to soak in the oil and then place it in the proper fan opening. As the cool breeze makes its way through the pad, it carries the scent throughout the room. Although this method is popular, the fans do tend to be a little noisy. In addition, no matter if the machine is battery or electricity operated, it is important to use the proper size fan for the right size room.

Another diffusion option is an electric heat diffuser. This neat unit first heats the oil and then uses a built-in fan to diffuse them.

A Nebulizer is by far the most sophisticated as well as expensive diffusing method out there today. This machine contains three parts, an electric pump, glass container and tubing or cork. The essential oils are forced or pumped into the glass container, as this is done; the pump has broken the oil down into smaller droplets which are then released into the air. This process in no way degrades the oil and actually helps in making the oil last longer.

Anyone who wishes to create their own diffusing method has several options to choose from. The first is very simple. By taking an ordinary tissue and placing a few drops of essential oils on it and then placing it nearby in a room, the aroma will be released by movement. While this method is fairly easy, unfortunately the scent that is produced is not very strong and does not last for a very lengthy amount of time.

Another extremely simple method is to use boiling water. Simply add about ten drops of essential oil to boiling water and the evaporation will disburse the aroma throughout the room.

Lastly, candles can be used as a diffuser for essential oils. Simply light a candle and allow it to burn for a few minutes. Then, blow out the candle and then place a few drops of essential oil into the melted wax. When you reignite the candle, the scent is disbursed throughout the room for all to enjoy.

While steam from boiling water and heat from a candle work well as diffusers, the scent tends to last only for a short time and you also run the risk of damaging the properties of the essential oils.
