A Real Insult Please

Avery Ryan
You are in the middle of a heated debate or argument and all of the sudden, "too bad you can't spell," or "way to know the difference between your and you're," flies out of the other person's mouth as their come back. Usually I see this on the Internet more than anywhere else. But, what happened? Did they need to point out my spelling and grammar errors? Did they run out of ways to support their point? Did they think that was really going to insult me?

It's like they ran out of ways to support their point, so they needed to pick something insignificant to throw at me instead.

Oh, Puh-lease!

If you want to insult me, make it a good one. Make it worth my time.

I've seen this so many times, mostly on the Internet. People have done it to me. I've seen it in comments people leave others on blogs, because they disagreed with someone's opinion (which I find juvenile, but we will leave that for another day and time). I am ashamed to admit that I did it back in middle school. But, I realized how ridiculous I sounded, and I can honestly say I haven't done it since. Why waste my time pointing out someone's mistake, when I sometimes do the same thing too?

You can tell me I have poor grammar, or point out I spelled a word wrong - BIG DEAL. Everyone makes mistakes. We are all human. I'm very well aware my grammar isn't perfect. I don't need you to point it out to me. I make mistakes, but I learn from them. Many people don't have perfect grammar. You can't tell me you've never made a grammar error in you life - even robots have glitches.

Ah, spelling. Who hasn't made a spelling mistake before? You've got to be kidding me, if you say you haven't. I make spelling mistakes too, especially, if I am typing. It happens. Sometimes your fingers just get out of line and, oops, the wrong key is hit. Sometimes you are just typing fast or writing quickly and you make a mistake and misspell a word, no big deal.

Of course, word processing programs on computers have spell check and grammar check, but they aren't spelling and grammar experts, they miss things too.

I really don't find these so-called "insults" to be anything close to insulting. Really, I wouldn't even call them insults. I really don't see any point to these "insults," unless you are arguing over who is the better speller or who has the best grammar. Besides that, I can't think of a reason to use them that would make sense to me. But when I hear or read these "insults," honestly, I laugh, especially if it is directed towards me.

There is no point in trying to take a dig at me by picking out my grammatical flaws. I don't find it insulting. I know I make mistakes, I'm only human. I'm okay with that. I think it's pretty funny when someone has to point out a mistake I made because you can't come up with anything else to argue your point or a better way to insult me.

So, if you plan on wasting your time and mine by insulting me do me a favor, make it a good insult. One that will really insult me, not just make me laugh. Please put a little effort behind it.

I totally agree! This is right up the alley with my AC Nit-Pickers Article. I absolutely cannot stand perfectionists. I am a work in progress and darn proud of it!

Avery, please accept my apology for the following. ALYCE: Are you lying intentionally, or are you merely mistaken in your recollections? My reply "that I could write yer butt under the table anytime," was in response to your challenging me to write an article about a topic of your choosing. This is the 2nd time you have falsely used this situation and this untrue allegation in claiming I was trying to insult you. I have insulted you before, and apparently you were not satisfied, or you so liked it ya want some more? Huh Baby? Are you a bad little Gurl, Alyce? You like it when I insult you? You must, because if you tell another lie about me in public, I will say things that will make your great-grandchildren be born with burning ears! See Alyce, THAT was an insult!

This article was directed to anyone in particular, but it's just something I've seen a lot of recently and I just don't get it. I definitely don't want to encourge more insulting behavior - I do agree that our society is rude enough as it is. I also don't get why people just can't say "I disagree." And there is also nothing wrong with a healthy debate. I just don't get the need to insult because of a difference of opinion, especially insults that have nothing to do with the debate. Thanks for all the feedback!

Go f%$k yourself you piece of S&!t, f&%$#T A$$, C@$k smoker! Is that better or is that still to juvenile. Oh it's too juvenile...OK. You want something more pithy and adult...OK. Hows this...If I wanted to read your pathetic, wretched, dismal, sad, pitiable, fecal matter I would apply pressure to your cranial cavity thereby squeezing out the aforementioned feeble minded fecal matter and then proceed to daub it on my computer screen and then examine it for idiotic idiosyncrasies. LOL. Is that better? ROFLOL. Just Pokin' fun. Good article.

Just don't encourage more insulting behavior- our society is rude enough.

What a dumb article. I could write yer butt under the table anytime*. Okay, did I do well? That* was the gist of an insult I got on one of my articles. I had to laugh at it, because the guy sounded to be about 13 and he is actually 51 years old. I seldom catch typos or spelling errors and see no reason to point them out, especially here at AC, with no proof-readers or editors checking for our mistakes. Spellcheck does not catch them all. I also do not get the insult thing; there are ways to say "I disagree" without resorting to elementary school behavior.

I hate when this happens! I agree, if you're going to make an insult it should be worth it. Great article.

Excellent! I make typos all the time. Like you said, the person could be just typing fast and not realize the mistake. Even an excellent speller cam misspell something, especially during typing. I think people are just too judgmental, in general.

Love it! Great article. I'm not sure who this article was directed at, but I loved it just the same!
