Playing against Dungeons and Dragons style dioramas, the children take part in a scavenger hunt for Tolkienesque paintings, sculptures and other trinkets and treasures scattered throughout the hotel. Running through the hotel hallways they encounter video kiosks of wizards and maidens who dispense secret clues, help them keep track of the progress of their individual quest, and trigger some of the 150 or so visual and audio effects which dot the Middle-Earth landscape.
To participate in the MagiQuest adventure each player must dawn a wand and pay a $10 per hour activation fee. The special wand cost $14.99 and can be enhanced with additional special attributes for additional fees. The wand is equipped with a unique IR signature for each player. By waving the special wand at ersatz tree video screens flicker on and ask questions of the player regarding the quest they are pursuing. The adventurer search for the treasure in the forest, based upon their selected quest, which takes up two floors of the hotel, which are painted to look like an outdoor forest.
In addition to the kiosk guides, hotel staff garbed in Elizabethan costumes also dispenses information and roam the game area to maintain safety and continuous game flow. As the gamer wanders through the forest they encounter fantastical objects which respond to their wand and notify them when they have located treasure or if they need to alter their search. Discovered treasures are collected and taken to a designated spot where the discoverer is rewarded for their valiance.
Does this sound like a vacation quest your children would be interested in? Unfortunately the hotel that hosts the MagiQuest Middle-Earth adventure theme in the Poconos has ask that I not reveal its name in print. They are too busy and are currently over booked for the rest of this season. But do not loose heart; there is a way to discover where the magic kingdom of MagiQuest lies.
