A Reason to Be Proud

The 2008 Election is America at Its Best

Jim Stillman
I received this personal message from a writer on another site:

I thought I'd send this personal message to you because I can almost hear your excitement in your comments.

CONGRATULATIONS! And for what it's worth I am pretty excited too. Not that the world is going to change overnight and I dare say Obama has won the Presidency at the most troubling economic time in my lifetime anyway. But wow! Maybe the world might just starting heading in a more sensible direction.

Enjoy the celebrations.

I responded:

I think we all won each and every one of us, in the USA and in all of the decent countries in the world. This is the message I have, imperfectly tried to say to haters and rumor mongers and their enablers. Obama will be our president -- just as McCain would have been. If we refuse to work together we will really messed up. Thank you so very much.

Last evening we, all of us, took part in what has been accurately called an historical event. Two lessons can be taken from the results. First, from now on, every child, black, white, Asian or Native American can honestly be assured by his or her parents that anything is possible, even becoming president, Second, we can show the world, and take pride in completing a particular ugly and divisive campaign, and, at its conclusion, come together as a country in a peaceful transition. No riots, no troops, no violence - just a common desire to move forward.

Just in case anyone cares, I started and ended with several core beliefs; my postings here and elsewhere have all been consistent.

What do George Bush, Dick Chaney, John McCain, Sarah Palin, Barack Obama and Joe Biden have in common? Each is an honorable, patriotic, decent person, and a loyal American; none is disloyal, a traitor, an evil person intent on taking away basic freedoms. Certainly I have my opinions as to their respective ability, outlook, intelligence and economic theories, but as to their basic intent to serve and protect and promote the interests of the United States, there can be no doubt.

I look forward as we all try and met our highest goals and nature.

Jim, I'm not quite as quick to give Bush and Cheney a pass, but I acknowledge and admire the spirit of your article...

What a great summing up! Now, if all the people who have been spewing hate and lies about Obama for so long will follow your lead.
