A Rebel Reflects on Princeton Review 2011 Party School List

I May Not Have Partied, but I was One of the Few

The Top 20 party schools list from the Princeton Review was released recently, and I am not surprised at all that the University of Mississippi, Ole Miss, was on the list. The Rebels ranked number five on the list, following Georgia, Ohio University, Penn State, and West Virginia University. Considering I am a 2010 graduate from the School of Accountancy with a Master's degree, this ranking sure made me chuckle.

Out of all the rankings that there are for universities out there, the Top Party Schools is one that many students turn to in making their final admissions decision.

The School of Accountancy at Ole Miss is ranked in the nation's top 20 programs at the #15 slot for their graduate/doctoral programs. The undergraduate program is ranked #18. To me, this ranking means more than the party school ranking. This is why I decided to go to Ole Miss.

Ironically, the University of Georgia - the #1 party school - ranks number seven for undergrad programs and #10 at the master's level on the same list. Could this mean that accountants are a bunch of fun party animals?

I am not surprised at all that the University of Mississippi made the list of top party schools. I went to a satellite campus near the Memphis, Tenn., border - so I wasn't around all the partying. That said, there were plenty of students joining our class (which is an hour from the main campus, by the way) because they needed a class to graduate. They had LOTS of stories to tell. The reason they needed classes to graduate was because of the, well, partying going on around campus.

Football games, final exams, mid-term exams, - any excuse to party is used by the most serious Rebels. There's never a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night that goes by without at least ONE party on-campus or at one of the Frat/Sorority houses.

The campus I went to is made up primarily of working adults and students still living with their parents. Many students still made the drive to Oxford for the weekend.

Although I did not partake in the partying, I do know that it occurred. Simply graduating from Ole Miss has given me bragging rights over my brother, who attended Michigan State University (#20 on the List). He claims that he's more fun than I am - but I went to the bigger party school, and that's evidence to the contrary.
