A Recession Has Benefits?

According to a report by Jay MacDonald for Bankrate.com, recession actually has great reasons for people to love it. MacDonald reported 10 reasons why people should not mope around but instead see recession as a positive thing for us and the economy.

First of all, the report states that bad economic condition forces people to eat more often at home than outside, thereby fostering time spent together as a family unit. We all know the importance of spending time together as a family, more understating of each other and needs. In fact, studies show that teenagers benefit from this as it allows them time with family and can decrease chances for suicide, substance abuse, and eating disorder. Home cooked meals are great for healthier body, so no one can go wrong with cooking and eating at home. All are result of staying more at home becuase times are hard.

The next important reason MacDonald cites for loving recession is the fact that more companies, particularly food and restaurant industries are more apt to give coupons and discounts. A study by ICOM Information and Communications of Toronto is said to find that about two thirds of Americans of all income levels will use coupons during the recession, and that amounts to about a quarter percent in savings for those family spending about $800 a month.

Starting your own business is also said to be a good thing during the recession. According to MacDonald's report, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and Disney all started their company in a time of economic hardship in the country. All these companies as we know are great economic giants that have spearheaded the careers and wealth of a lot of Americans. Thus, starting a business in a time when most people are getting laid off, and renting space is cheap may not be a bad idea. It was a lot of these people who had been laid off that became their own bosses thereby helping to stimulate the economy back to progress. So if you have always wanted to be in control of hiring and firing by being your own boss, this may be your opportunity.

Perhaps the greatest benefit I found in this report is that recession forces us to "reflect and reassess the true meaning and goals of our lives." The lack of plenty forces us to rethink the reasons we do certain things, for instance buy a gas guzzling SUV when we in fact can fare well with a medium size fuel efficient cars. It really allows us to reevaluate what are really important to us, what we need and what we don't really need.

I personally do not wish for a bad economic situation on anyone, or the country for that matter. But since the nation is in that predicament, it is a time to think about what we can do to make it through the hard times. There are plenty of ways to adjust with the current condition without losing your sanity. Focus on the things that matter most to you and your family, and discard the extras that weigh you down.
