A Response from Main Street to President Obama's Speech

Anastasia Zoldak
I watched as President Obama walked into the chambers of Congress. It stuck me that those giving jubilant cheers have no real understanding of the fear and uncertainty of their constituents.

The President started his speech as if he was still campaigning for the office he now holds and began his speech throwing the blame of our pain to those who held the office before him. He wanted us to forget his own responsibility in it creating this mess as a member of Congress.

The President discussed the past of big government, yet forgetting his addition of trillions to our debt. President Obama discussed how new technologies will drive our new economy and the need for Banks to provide loans and financing. "The flow of credit is our life blood," he said forgetting that out of control spending by the populace and government is what has gotten us to our current state.

The President has many ideas, but as usual, he lacked the details that the American people truly need for confidence in his plans. As if to assure us of this new "Transparency in Government" he has created an oversight committee over the business and financial industries in America, but who will oversee Congress?

Who will hold Congress accountable, the Lobbyists or the campaign contributors?

I understand Mr. President that the "Average American" is no longer a partner with our Congressional Representatives. Where is the responsibility of Congress? They have not shown us good faith in the past. You spoke of banking CEOs getting bonus dollars and flying in private jets, but what about Congress and their trips to Italy.

You gave a great speech Mr. President but, as a nation, we cannot afford any more demagoguery. It has cost us enough already, we will judge our government by its actions.

Confidence will not return Mr. President until Congress can show the American people that they are in control of their own avarice. Maybe Congress should show good faith with the American people and forgo their salaries and healthcare for the next four years. Then maybe they could really understand what the American people are going through.

I tend to concur but also note that he is trying to adjust the whole climate of Washington. I think the applause was about that. Those people realize he's right about some things even if they don't want to admit it. My wife noted and warned that he did not talk to the camera.

But perhaps his first address to Congress was about adjustment there.
