A Restaurant Review of a Kennedy Space Center Area Eatery

Marcia Sattgast
I just took a trip to the area around Kennedy Space Center with my family and while I was there I asked a local person to recommend a good place to eat lunch. He responded by asking me if I wanted good food or a well known restaurant and I chose good food. He directed me down a back road and told me to watch on the left hand side of the road for an old weather beaten building called New York New York. He warned me that it can be a bit of a biker hangout and that it is crowded with locals. What I discovered was that I do believe I had the best lunch that I had ever had at a restaurant.

This little restaurant is not much to look at on the outside and the inside is fairly old also. The owners and waitresses are extremely welcoming and cordial and they are always there if your glass seems a bit empty or you finish a plate. The menu is simple and changes depending on the day and what the cook wants to make. One of the meals that I had (I went back three times in one week), was an old fashioned ham steak dinner. I had a ham steak that covered the entire plate almost, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn bread and a drink all for less than $10.00. The portions are very generous in this restaurant. I enjoyed my meal so much and I raved about it so much that my waitress told me I should tell the cook. The cook was a wonderfully shy man who seemed embarrassed by my praise who simply stated that he liked good food so that is what he tried to make.

My next meal was a pot roast that melted in my mouth with exquisite flavors of fresh vegetables. My last meal before I regretfully had to head to the airport started out with a cup of gumbo that would make Emeril Lagasse ask for more. My main course was a perfectly cooked cabbage roll. The portions are so large that it is difficult to finish everything, but you don't want to stop eating.

The other item that should not be missed is the homemade cobblers that they make for dessert. He uses whatever fruits are in season and the type varies at least once a week. It is served in a charming crock pot with vanilla ice cream on top. I honestly don't think that there is an item on the menu that looked unappetizing.

So if you are looking for great food and don't require a fancy atmosphere then try out the New York New York in Titusville, FL just north of Kennedy Space Center (KSC) The address is 5401 Riveredge Drive, Titusville, FL. The phone number is (321)264-2585. This restaurant is also a great place to watch KSC activities like space shuttle launches. The restaurant sits on the river and has a beautiful view of Cape Canaveral.
