A Review of the 80's Album Synchronicity by the Police

The Police Ignite the 80's with Synchronicity

Ed Possing
Few rock bands reach the heights that Sting and The Police did at the beginning of the 1980's. The Police put out their best, and sadly, last full length album in 1983, Synchronicity. Band mates Sting (lead vocals, keyboards, and bass) Andy Summers (guitar and backing vocals) and Stewart Copeland (drums) have put out quality albums for years, but Synchronicity eclipsed them all. Synchronicity sold 8,000,000 copies in the U.S. alone. The album itself won a 1983 Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The music world stood up and took notice as the Police and Synchronicity put hit after hit on the charts. Here are the ones that made it big:

Every Breath You Take. A beautiful yet jarring track that was written during the ending of Sting's marriage to Frances Tomelty, this classic made number one on the Billboard Hot 100 as well number one on the Mainstream Rock charts. It also won the 1983 Grammy for song of the year as well as a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

King of Pain. This haunting song made it to number one on the Mainstream Rock charts as well as number three on the Billboard Hot 100. King of Pain also made it to number 33 on the Adult Contemporary charts. Sting gives the world a look into his very soul with writing that speaks to us darkly. We listen and shudder.

Synchronicity II. This track is filled with vivid imagery and angst including a tip of the hat to William Butler Yeats' poem The Second Coming. Synchronicity II takes a walk up to the Billboard Hot 100's number 16 spot and Mainstream Rock's number nine. Fake suicides and the Loch Ness Monster, this is post-apocalyptic Police at their best.

Wrapped Around Your Finger. This song scored spots on the Billboard Hot 100 (number eight), Mainstream Rock (number nine) and Adult Contemporary (number 13) charts. Wrapped Around Your Finger is filled with mythological and literary allusions including references to the Scylla and Charybdis monsters of Greek mythology and references to the story of Faust. Sting is an intelligent song writer and Wrapped Around Your Finger is where he really showcases his talent. This is the capstone track of Synchronicity.

The band went their separate ways in 1984. Most notably, Sting went on to a successful solo career. Nevertheless, The Police and Synchronicity have left their mark on the world. Any fan of the 80's music scene will want Synchronicity in their collection. These links are where Synchronicity from the Police can be purchased:
