A Review of The Act of Marriage

A Christian Book About the Beauty of Sexual Love

Kaitlyn Joseph
The LaHayes have been counseling couples for decades now, with emphasis on sexual problems. Their Christian views and background help them to really connect with other couples. Even though they are Christians, they firmly believe in being very honest and blunt about sex. Many Christians throughout the years have avoided discussing sex and just leaving it to the world to teach about sex. Since the church does not tend to speak bluntly about sex (they usually hide it and avoid the topic) many couples have gotten misconceptions and gone into marriage not having a clue what will happen besides the fact that they will have sex. The LaHayes have used this book to educate about why sex is important, what typically helps couples, and common problems that couples face.

The bible clearly discusses sex and points out that it was God's creative mind that made it. The LaHayes take scripture to heart and have given biblical grounds for each of their viewpoints. With many scriptural references the LaHayes make sure that God's word is the basis of what they say about sex. God made the human bodies to reproduce through the act of sex and to use sex for pleasuring each other (within the bounds of marriage). With a scriptural understanding, the LaHayes go into detail about the productive organs and all of the body parts that are used during the act of sex. This type of approach helps couples who have been under-educated to still have a fulfilling sex-life at the beginning of their marriage. Even though each couple must do a great deal of exploring on their own, the LaHayes give tips and a general starting point for couples to begin at.

The LaHayes go into a fair amount of detail when discussing the wedding night, and are blunt about what to expect. The descriptiveness helps young couples understand what to expect instead of just having a general idea. This is to help calm the nervous tension of the wedding night, especially if the couple reads this book together before the wedding date or even on the honeymoon. By discussing bluntly different techniques for young couples to gain the most pleasure on their first intercourse, the LaHayes hope to help couples begin their married sex-life in a great way.

The LaHayes take the time to breakdown myths, misconceptions, and problems that couples have about sex. By taking separate questions and even devoting a whole section to these questions, the LaHayes answer many questions and clear up a great deal of confusion. The question section is great for references and perfect for pre-marital counselors if a tough question comes up. The LaHayes stay blunt in this section, and make sure they are very clear in answering each question. This section covers a great deal and variety of questions, so it will most likely cover any question that a young couple has.

So, whether you are a young engaged couple, a pre-marital counselor, or an older couple who just want to benefit from the joys of sex, this book is a good read. It is blunt and holds nothing back, so it may not be for everyone. The LaHayes are honest and direct about sex and how to enjoy it. With a Godly perspective and sincerity about wanting couples to enjoy sex as much as they can, The Act of Marriage is a nice addition to any home.
