A Review of Aly & AJ: Kelly Clarkson and Her Little Sister's Band Are Great!

Tiffany Lopes
If Kelly Clarkson had a sister who sounded like Hilary Duff and they formed a band and did great things, you would have Aly & AJ. And I can't give them enough credit.

These girls play guitar and write most of their music and lyrics, and they're only in high school.

You might have seen Aly and AJ Michalka singing in several of the Disney Channel's music videos. They've zip-a-dee-doo-dahed into my ipod and heart.

Aly, born Alyson Michalka, stars in Phil of the Future and is just half of the popular band Aly & AJ. The other half, Amanda Joy (AJ), is actually the younger of the sisters. Did you think they were twins? Well, Aly refers to them as "the first set of twins to be born two years apart."

These two guitarists have put much of the music to several Disney movies. Ice Princess, Herbie: Fully Loaded, Twitches, The Santa Clause 3, and Cow Belles (which they star in) are just some of the movies that have featured these sisters' songs.

Their first album Into the Rush ceases to amaze me. Their hit song "Rush" has a similar premise to the others: "Don't let nobody tell you your life is over/Be every color that you like/Into the rush now/you don't have to know how/know it all before you try." It's no wonder that Disney features their songs. There's no one better to tell us to be ourselves than two people that are.

For all the great work they've done on their last album, Aly & AJ have been nominated for an American Music Award for best Contemporary Inspirational artist. And inspirational, they are!

They're role models for everyone. And they don't just sing, act, write music, and play guitar. They're beyond extraordinary. These teenage girls are co-chairs of the Children's Advisor Board for the AmberWatch Foundation. This charity is dedicated to educating 25 million children and parents on how to keep away from abductors and predators through its "Be Safe!" program.

Aly & AJ also recorded a song and video for the foundation. "I Am One of Them" is featured on the AmberWatch Foundation's website (amberwatchfoundation.org). They've also just released Acoustic Hearts of Winter, their new holiday CD.

As you can see, these girls have a lot on their plate, and they're just in high school. Now can you understand why these girls "don't want to be no one but" themselves? Me too.

  • These sisters just celebrated their first gold album on the Hollywood Records label for "Into the Rush" (August 2005).
  • Unlike most teen singers that cry and mope about lost love and "the one," these girls are a little more realistic and sing about things they have more experience with.
  • Their song "I Am One of Them" is the song title created for the AmberWatch Foundation.
Project AmberWatch is providing 50,000 AmberWatches to at-risk children by the end of 2006. Go to www.amberwatchfoundation.org to help.
