A Review of Baseball Movie the Sandlot

H. Ann Myers
The Sandlot is a 1993 baseball comedy great for laughs and family viewing. If as a kid you ever played summer pick up baseball, no adults welcome, you will love this movie.

Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) moves to a new neighborhood with his mother and her new husband. Scotty is a nerdy kind of kid who is perfectly happy staying inside building models. His mother pushes him to find new friends. Along comes Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez (Mike Vitar) who is on the look out for another boy to play sandlot baseball with his friends. He befriends Scotty and teaches him the game.

Here are three excellent reasons why this movie will become one of your favorites.

James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones, from the baseball movie Field of Dreams, is in The Sandlot as Mr. Mertle. Mr. Mertle is both the owner of the The Beast, a dog that eats baseballs and small children, and a former Negro League baseball player. Any baseball movie with James Earl Jones in it is worth checking out.

Super Funny Scenes

One super funny scene is at the community pool where 'Squints' gets the lifeguard Wendy's attention in the most dramatic way possible. Another is at the fair when the boys try chewing tobacco.

Great Movie for Kids

This is a movie that everyone will love. Adults will be reminded of childhood adventures; children will laugh until their bellies hurt.

Although it will help your enjoyment of this movie if you have heard of Babe Ruth, you do not have to be a baseball fan to enjoy The Sandlot. You can be as clueless about baseball as Scotty is at first and still you will want to watch this movie again.
