A Review of Billys Downtown Zulu - Zulu, Indiana

Pat Bartels
While visiting in New Haven, Indiana several family members wanted to get together and have dinner out. It was decided that we would all meet at Billys. There were thirteen in our group. From New Haven it is just a short drive of about 8 ½ miles to Zulu which is located near the Indiana/Ohio border. Several family members came from close by Fort Wayne, and it is probably a 20 to 30 minute drive.

Surprisingly, Billys has their own internet site (you can check it out here). On the site they have their menu and pricing listed. The hours are Tuesday through Sunday starting at 4:00 pm. I'm not sure what time they close, but their phone number is 260-623-3583.

Several in our party had the Flautas. I had the chicken Flautas. This is not your typical Mexican food or restaurant. Billys says their signature dish is their Nachos. When you order nachos here you get a lot of food. More than any one person can eat. Back to the Flautas. What was different about the chicken Flautas was that the chicken was ground. It was tasty, but I wasn't wild about it. I probably would not order this dish again, or if I did, I would choose the beef.

They also have an American menu with things like fish, steak, and pork chops. One of our group ordered the 16 oz T-bone. The cost of the steak dinner was $17.95 and included a salad, choice of potato, and a roll with butter. It must have been good, because there was nothing left by the end of the dinner.

The service was good. When one of our group asked about the Margaritas the server brought a sample to try. We are pretty picky about our Margaritas, and it was decided that we would skip the Margaritas. The Margaritas were just way too sweet. When the food was served everything was hot. Which is quite a feat with a large group. Our waitress was good about making sure everything was okay, and that our drinks were refilled.

Out of curiosity, I decided to check to see if there were any other reviews on this establishment. I found one site where people voted whether or not they liked Billys. I say that 19 people had voted, and that they had a 73% approval rating. I also found where someone from Wilmington, NC said this was the best Mexican food in the state of Indiana. I beg to differ on that statement. Another person from Ohio said they really liked the burritos.

Would I go back to Billys? Probably only if someone else wanted to go. This would not be a place that I would choose on my own. In other words it's not a favorite. It just reminded me of an old bar out in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure there are others that might not agree with me, but that's their opinion. I just think there are a lot nicer places to choose from.

I don't go anywhere that can't make a good margarita. I only have 2 or 3 a year but when I want one, I want it to be good.
