A Review of the Budget Friendly 10.3 Megapixel Kodak MX1063

JW Price
When it comes to buying digital cameras a good name brand can be a make or break for the sales of a particular model. Unfortunately for the consumer this is often also accompanied by a high price. However, thanks to the Kodak MX1063 all is not lost for the budget shopper. This camera is on the high end of the resolution spectrum boasting a 10.3 megapixel CMOS. It also happens to be one of Kodak's most affordable digital cameras retailing at less than $150, and if you are willing to brave the crowds on Black Friday you'll find it even more affordable. I have taken the opportunity to get a hold of the Kodak MX1063 and I am going to let you know just how well it performs for me, that way you can decide for your self if it is worth braving the mob.

Product Overview:

The Kodak MX1063 has a silver case constructed of plastic. Despite its cheaper look it is constructed rather sturdy. It has a relatively small profile and would easily fit in a purse or pocket. The LCD screen takes up the majority of the back side with a few imaging options available via controls to the right of the screen. Most noticeably missing on this Kodak digital camera is a view finder. If you're shooting in a setting where the light intensity is very high, like on the beach for example, the LCD washes out and a view finder would be helpful.

The picture quality is great for a camera in this price range. The best pictures are taken outside or indoors with ample lighting. The most notable issues are with action photos. If the subject is moving at a fast speed then the image will blur. I recently used it at a basketball game and the players were almost always blurred except during foul shots. The other issue is with low light night shots. With the flash activated it does well, however there is an issue with artifacts when the flash is deactivated.

The features are very limited on this camera. It has some of the standard options like landscape mode, night shot, and easy mode. It does a good job for casual on the fly photos, but will be unlikely to impress the professional photographers out there.

Product Value:

The Kodak MX1063 is a solid value at its normal retail price of $150. It is listed in Target's circular for under $100, which is truly a steal. This is perfect as a backup camera if you want to keep your expensive one at home or if you need one to keep in the car for emergencies. I would also recommend this as a great first digital camera and even for children over the age of 6.
