A Review: Chef's Cupboard Chunky Chicken & Dumplings Soup

Soup's On

Annette Robbins
After running some errands and arriving home ready to have lunch, my husband had already anticipated my needs and had warmed up some soup for my lunch for which I was appreciative. Usually, I prefer making my own soups and seldom buy prepared soups but this particular soup caught my taste buds' fancy.

Chef's Cupboard Chunky Chicken & Dumplings soup is attractively packaged in an eye catching brown and red and yellow label. On the front of the 18.8 ounce can, there is a picture of a bowl pictured with vegetables and dumplings as its contents along with a spoon filled with the soup. Along the side of the bowl are two brown circles with one stating that product is a good source of protein and the other circle touting the fact that the product contains 0g of trans fat per serving.

As far as the preparation of Chef's Cupboard Chunky Chicken & Dumplings Soup, it is prepared as most canned soups. You can use the stove top or microwave method and the instructions state not to dilute the contents with water. Whatever method used, it does not take much time to heat the contents. Any leftovers should be refrigerated and the contents used by the date printed on the end of the can.

I found the taste of Chef's Cupboard Chunky Chicken & Dumplings soup to be full bodied and not at all salty which is my main complaint with commercially prepared soups that are not listed as low salt. I must admit that I was skeptical that I would like the soup because I generally make my own homemade soups instead of purchasing soups. The soup contains chicken, peas, celery, carrots, corn and dumplings to name a few. The dumplings are well shaped and do not disintegrate upon heating the soup.

With our desire to eat healthier and with an eye on our waistlines, the total calories in one can of Chunky Chicken & Dumplings soup is 190 calories which is not excessive in my opinion. The calories from fat are listed at 80 with 30 mg of cholesterol and 2 grams of dietary fiber. Although the soup contains 860 mg of sodium which is comparable with many canned soups, I definitely did not detect the salty test I have experienced with other soups containing the same amount of sodium content. If you are closely monitoring your sodium content, your health provide may recommend you ingest a soup with a lower salt content. The nutritional label lists vitamin A as the highest content at 45% followed by 4% content for calcium and iron. The label states that Chef's Cupboard Chunky Chicken and Dumplings soup contains wheat, egg, soy and is lactose free.

For serving suggestions, Chef's Cupboard Chunky Chicken & Dumplings soup can be served with a toasted cheese sandwich, a vegetarian sandwich, panini sandwich or your favorite crackers. It can also be added to other soups if you like to mix soup combinations as I enjoy doing. Another suggestion is to add this soup to your homemade stews for a tasty addition.

Chef's Cupboard Chunky Chicken & Dumplings soup is distributed by Aldi Inc. and the company offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee; there is a small label on the can stating that the can is recyclable and the packaging is made from 38% recycled material.

I recommend Chef's Cupboard Chunky Chicken & Dumplings soup as a pantry staple. I found the taste to be beyond my expectations and I will definitely add it to my grocery list as a regular item. Visit your local Aldi store and look for the Chef's Cupboard Chunky Chicken & Dumplings soup in the soup and broth section. It's souper!
