Founded in 2008 by creative genius and baker Patty Rothman, More Cupcakes is certainly banking on the cupcake trend, which has evolved, into a staple treat in America. However, don't be fooled, these aren't your typical grocery store cupcakes. Nor is this your typical bakery.
Located at 1 E Delaware, the only thing the stands out in More's exterior are white bold Helvetica letters that lets those passing by know where they can get more.
I stumbled across More while rushing through some holiday shopping along Rush Street. More's exterior is quite unsuspecting, but as I stepped out of Starbucks, tall black coffee in hand, after dismissing their stale-looking baked goods, I peered into More's window to see what they had to offer. Within a moment, I knew I had to step inside. The shop was small, but the smell of freshly baked goods outweighed the crowded room. I stood inches from their display case, in which art-like cupcakes with perfectly sculpted frosting and precious-gem décor sat waiting to be devoured carefully by adoring fans.
My eyes immediately jumped to the red velvet, then to their bacon bacon bacon, and finally to their "more" cupcake. But how could a cupcake-loving girl choose just one More cupcake? It just wasn't possible. It was finally my turn to choose from the case and I quickly ordered the three at $3.50 a piece. The employee behind the counter briskly packed up my cupcakes, which were given to me snuggled into a sleek box adorned with the More logo. I smiled and thanked her, then squeezed through the crowd and out the door.
When I finally got home that evening I was so excited to try my cupcakes. The first was the red velvet. I'm a sucker for red velvets, but More's version is a bit different. The cake portion, so moist and soft, is heavenly. Its luxurious red tone was met with a rich taste and texture. The frosting tasted like a fusion between a smooth butter cream and a slightly tangy cream cheese. Still delicious nonetheless.
The next cupcake I wanted to try was their signature more cupcake, adorned with their name piped on the top of a thinner, velvety chocolate top. The chocolate cake was simply delicious, so rich and moist. It does indeed taste like a Hostess cake, but don't let that go to your head. You can bring back childhood memories while indulging in a little bit of sophistication.
Finally, on to the bacon bacon bacon cupcake. I had never had a savory cupcake before and most people seem to either love them or hate them. But since I do love bacon, I thought it would be worth to try. This cupcake was simply the epitome of savory. It had a thick, mouth-watery bacon-flavored frosting that fused together a meaty flavor with a nice, salty bite. The cake, again very moist and delicious, perfectly complemented the amazing frosting. Needless to say, I'm sold on the savory cupcake.
Overall, More really is more. It's more delicious, more artistic, more of everything you could desire in a cupcake. It's not just a treat, it's a masterpiece. And your stomach, taste buds, and eyes will certainly agree.
