A Review of Chirp's Chicken & Rice Eatery in Houston, TX

Inexpensive and Tasty Fried Chicken and Chinese Food in the Heights

Bobbi Leder
Chirp's Chicken & Rice eatery in Houston, TX is not only inexpensive but it is tasty too. Chirp's is a take-out restaurant in the Houston Heights which is perfect for those looking for looking for a quick meal on the go. Their specialty is fried chicken but they also have an abundant Chinese food menu. I went to Chirp's for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the speed, efficiency, friendliness and willingness to please that this family owned café in Houston, TX offered.

Before ordering, I asked the male owner how the spicy shrimp dish was prepared and if I could get it without onions. He was very accommodating and even checked with the kitchen before he came back with confirmation that they could indeed make it the way I wanted. He also explained to me the difference between pan fried and wok fried - one uses oil and one does not. The Chinese dishes come with rice (white or fried) and an egg roll so for $5.59, I got a meal big enough for two - does it get any better than that? I also ordered a small egg drop soup which cost $2.19.

The owners are friendly and easy-going which made waiting a pleasure. While I was waiting for my food, another customer came in with a written order - one that was obviously written by someone else - and since the owner could not understand the order, he actually called the person who wrote the order down to ensure they got his order right. Now how many Houston, TX businesses would do that? I was very impressed that they went the extra mile.

When I got home I was anxious to see what my food looked like so I opened the containers and was happy to see there was real egg (and a lot of it) in the egg drop soup; and my spicy shrimp dish was filled with large shrimp, mushrooms, green bell peppers, and carrots, water chestnuts, and bamboo shoots. The egg drop soup was savory; it had enough of a kick to give it flavor but not so much to make it spicy and the egg was delicious. Though I ordered a small soup, it was really big enough for two portions.

The spicy shrimp dish was spicy enough to make my nose run but I loved the flavor. I used the white rice to soak up the spicy sauce as an accompaniment to the shrimp and vegetables. I can't recommend Chirp's Chicken & Rice in Houston, TX enough.

They are located at 300 West 20th Street, Houston, TX (in the Heights), 77008. Their phone number is (713) 861-1749. Chirp's Chicken & Rice in Houston, TX is open Monday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Chirp's is closed on Sunday.

They sound like a great little place although I did giggle at the fried chicken and Chinese combo.

Fried rice, egg drop soup, and egg rolls equals a great meal. Add sweat and sour something and I will purr. :)
