Body Sugaring

Cleopatra's Secret is Houston's first sugaring spa and one of the cleanest and nicest establishments I've ever been to. I've tried just about every hair removal method (except for laser hair removal which I'm not a candidate for apparently because of my skin type) and though I thought waxing provided the best results, I thought I'd try sugaring which is supposed to be similar. The difference is, sugar adheres to the hair whereas wax adheres to the skin. Needless to say, a hair removal method that does not adhere to the skin is one that I prefer as there is less pain and less chance of the skin ripping (which has happened to me in the past).

The Benefits of Sugaring

Sugaring dates back to ancient Egyptian times and if something has been around that long, you know it has to be good. The mixture contains only natural ingredients: sugar, lemon and water so you don't have to worry about any resins or anything artificial that can cause an allergic reaction. Another benefit is the fact that the sugar mixture does not dry so the hair removal process is actually quicker than waxing because the spa technician can apply the sugar to the entire area where you want your hair removed. A quicker hair removal process is always a plus.

My Experience

I first heard about Cleopatra's Secret when I met one of the owners, Cynthia Martin, at the Reliant Dog Show in Houston, TX in 2008. We had a wonderful discussion about dogs (which started because my husband and I spotted Cynthia's dogs in doggy strollers which we found to be both hysterical and very cute) and at the end of our conversation she handed me her card. I saw that she worked at Cleopatra's Secret and though I pondered making an appointment, it wasn't until three years later that I actually did.

Because of the bad experiences I had with waxing in the past I was hesitant to try sugaring, but an upcoming vacation prompted me to call Cleopatra's Secret and boy am I glad I did. I had no problem making an appointment and I found their location with ease (in the Memorial area of Houston, TX). When I arrived I filled out a new client form and looked at the gorgeous waiting area which was stunningly clean and full of character. The spa has an Egyptian theme which I found interesting to look at.

Cynthia is as personable and friendly as they get and just the right person to make clients feel at ease. She is spunky, funny, and down-to-earth and makes you forget that you are there to have your hair removed. Cynthia explained the differences between waxing and sugaring and did exactly as I asked (with my bikini area). She removed my hair quickly and painlessly and before I knew it, my bikini area was done. Cynthia gave me two samples of PFB Vanish to prevent ingrown hair and made the process of how hair follicles get clogged very clear.

When Cynthia finished the sugaring, she showed me how everything looked, gave me some privacy so I could wash up (they fill a sink full of soapy water and two towels -- one dry and one wet), and apply antibiotic ointment (to prevent an infection). This is something no other hair removal spa has ever done and I applaud Cleopatra's Secret for going the extra mile.

If you're still not sure if sugaring is for you, Cleopatra's Secret offers a free consultation and demonstration so you have nothing to lose. Check out their website for tips on what to do and not do before your appointment. I cannot recommend them enough. Cleopatra's Secret isn't cheap but you get what you pay for and when it comes to safe, clean and pain-free hair removal, it's worth the price.
