A Review of Coleman's Insect Repellent 25% Deet

An Insect Repellent that Really Works

Kent Hadley
Coleman has been a leading brand for camping supplies for many years. When they put their name on a product, you expect it to be made for camping. Campers need a good insect repellant which will keep away the biting insects as well as the annoying gnats which swarm around you.

The Coleman Insect Repellant 25% Deet does everything it is advertised to do and more. I purchased a twin pack of 6oz cans at Gander mountain for $9.99. These are aerosol cans with an on/off twist cap. This is a nice feature to keep kids from spraying the insecticide or from accidentally spraying the insecticide during travel. You can hold the can in any direction to spray, even upside down.

The directions say to use just enough to cover exposed skin and clothing. They also caution against using too much or soaking the skin. I sprayed my skin and clothing lightly with the Coleman 25% Deet Insect Repellant. Then I used a tissue and sprayed that until it was wet, to wipe on my face and head. My wife applied the product in the same fashion.

The first thing we noticed is there was no odor. Unlike some other insect repellants which coat you with an insecticide smell, this product left no odor. The next thing was that it is not greasy. Our skin did not feel as if it was coated with anything. This was a good feeling since it was a hot day.

When we hike into the deep woods, we will wear long pants, socks, boots and long sleeved shirts. Today we decided to allow the Coleman 25% Deet Insect Repellant to do all of the work and hiked off in our shorts and tank tops. We could feel the mosquitos land but none of them stayed to bite.

The Coleman 25% Deet was even keeping the mosquitos away from under our clothing where we did not spray, as per the directions. So far we were very pleased with the product. When we got back to the campsite, a thorough tick search revealed none of the little suckers stuck to us.

The next test was to see if the product would really last for eight hours as it said on the can. After supper that night we took a short hike, in a mosquito infested woods. This was about seven hours after the original application of the Coleman 25% Deet Insect Repellant. Once again we were not bothered by the pesky mosquitos during the hike.

Wisconsin Pharmacal LLC makes the Coleman 25% Deet Insect Repellant for the Coleman Co. They also make other insect repellants which contain no Deet for Coleman and there is even a 40% Deet product available. My local Gander Mountain only stocked the 25% Deet but the other products are available online.

Coleman has again proven they are the company for camper products. The Coleman 25% Deet Insect repellant was the best insect repellant I have used over many years of camping. This will be the brand of choice in our trailer from now on.
