A Review of the Dixie Cafe

Memphis, TN

Jacob Horn
This Dixie Cafe is located at 2861 Bartlett Blvd. in Memphis, TN. Their telephone number is 901-377-2211. This review is based on a visit that took place on the 20 February 2011. It is located next to Tuesday Morning and Mandarin Palace Chinese. It also located within walking distance of Malco Bartlett Cinema 10 (more on this later). If you are traveling on I-40 take exit 12 no matter what direction you are coming from. Turn left onto Sycamore View Road if coming from the West and right if coming from the East. The main thing to remember is that you want to heading Northwest on Sycamore View Road. Sycamore View Road will become Bartlett Blvd and once you make the exit from I-40 you will probably be on this road for anywhere from 8-15 minutes depending on traffic and lights. Dixie Cafe will be on the left.

The decor in Dixie Cafe is is just kind of plain southern decor. You can tell it is a chain right when you walk in. In my opinion they really do not have a signature dish. It is primarily down home southern cooking. My dad use to say "Why would you go to Dixie Cafe when you can make all their dishes in the comfort of your own kitchen?" With that being said I have eaten at The Dixie Cafe in various locations probably around 15 times and each time I have had pretty decent food.

On this visit I ordered the Meat Lovers Chef Salad and my wife ordered the Shepherd's Pie (Light). The Shepherd's Pie is meat loaf topped with mashed potatoes, Cheddar cheese, brown gravy. My wife very much enjoyed this meal. This meal also comes with two side items. My wife ordered the squash and a small salad. Side items include green beans, turnip greens, and seasoned french fries among other various items. Click on this link to view other side items (www.dixiecafe.com/images/menus/dc_menu_feats_vegetables.jpg).

My Meat Lover's Chef Salad was excellent. It came with ham, turkey, and bacon. Also, all meals come with your choice of rolls and/or cornbread. We normally ask for all rolls and be sure to ask for some honey to dip your rolls in. We also ordered a Super Sampler appetizer. This comes with pickles, mushrooms, chicken tenders, and fried cheese sticks. It also includes dipping sauces (Honey Mustard, Ranch, and Gravy). It always hits the spot. Finally, for some reason I love pouring honey on my salad. My wife introduced me to that concept when we were dating and it has stuck.

The total cost of our meal was $30.23. We split the Super Sampler with a couple we were eating with ($4.15). The Shepherd's Pie was $7.99 and my Meat Lovers Chef Salad was $7.99. My wife had a Vanilla Coke ($1.89) and I had a Sweet Peach Tea ($1.99). It was almost to sweet. My wife claims that Dixie has the vest Vanilla Coke so you might give that a try. Our subtotal was $24.01. Tax was $2.22 and we tipped $4.00 for a grand total of $30.23.

I would definitely recommend eat at The Dixie Cafe. We have a good experience almost every time we go and we have been going for years now. Also, the Malco Bartlett Cinema 10 is the best place to view a movie in the whole wide world. Their movies are a little old (e.g., most of the movies they are showing came out 5-8 months ago but admission is only $2.50. I will be doing a more in depth review of this cinema in the future.
