A Review of Eddie Izzard's Stand Up Comedy DVD: Dress to Kill

Angela Colley
Quite possibly the greatest stand up set released to date by the UK comedian, Eddie Izzard, Dress to Kill is witty, thought provoking, and a definite own for any Izzard fan. Originally a global tour, the Dress to Kill DVD was filmed in San Francisco. The film features both Eddie Izzard's unbelievably funny impression of San Francisco opener, as well as the hit stand up Dress to Kill.

The Dress to Kill skit was a highlight of Izzard's career. Focused around his own history, as well as Britain's, Izzard seeks to entertain the intelligent viewer, and he succeeds. Starting with a hilariously dark look at American's view points, followed by an explanation of how the Executive Transvestite came to be, this skit never disappoints.

The main length of the skit is centered around the abridged version of history as only Izzard could see it. From it's humble beginnings at Stone Hinge through WW2, Izzard covers it all in side-splitting hilarity. To keep the skit from being one sided, Izzard throws in stories on virginity, the film The Great Escape, and the Heimlich Maneuver. The DVD also features an encore performance, a unique recap of the film Speed.

The DVD is available in region 1 format, and while not the best quality, is perfectly adequate. Bonus features abound though, more then making up for the quality during the main skit. There is commentary by Izzard, highlighting his new idea of Tall Screen viewing. The DVD also includes the stand up, Dress to Circle, filmed in Paris and spoken entirely in French. While this is a huge disappointment to those of us who don't speak French, Izzard does provide some commentary. Ultimately, the bonus features are a nice addition to the DVD, and worth watching.

Overall, any fan of comedy would enjoy this DVD. This is truly Izzard's most world wide humor, meaning it is not strictly something for the UK to enjoy. American fans will love this stand up as well. If you are a history buff or a movie fanatic you are sure to get a kick out of this DVD.

Izzard is hilarious. I love all his comedy specials. One of my favorites is live at Wembley Stadium. Here are a few clips you need to check out... http://bit.ly/1qcEBt
