There are currently 193 Apps for Barnes and Noble's Nook Color, and new ones are added each week. One app that I have become acquainted with is called Evernote.
I have had my Nook Color for a couple of months, and I am really loving it. When I first purchased my Nook, the app store didn't have anything that you could really choose from. That was before Barnes and Noble did a major update to the Nook Color.
The update for the Nook Color was a very big deal. It made it into a tablet device that was one of the cheapest on the market. The addition of the app store was also new. Since the Nook is an android device, it would be logical that apps would be something that can easily be integrated.
Barnes and Noble, however, does not allow access to the android marketplace, which makes some people not quite happy with the Nook Color. B&N prefers to keep their app store completely under their control. Although from B&Ns viewpoint, you can see the logic in their wanting to control their selections.
I'm a list maker, and that's what I was mainly looking for. The Evernote application completely fills the bill. You can create lists that can be checked off, and it will sync between your PC, Nook and phone. It doesn't sync up with Microsoft Outlook. So if you like to create lists in Outlook, this won't be the app to use to integrate those lists.
Lists are not the only thing that this app does. You can input your thoughts and save them as notes. On your phone you can take pictures of things, and the application will recognize the text and turn it into a note for you. You can use your phone to take audio notes.
As you can see it's a pretty nice application. The Nook Color, however, does not have the capability to use all of the features of Evernote on its own. That's kind of a drawback. If you have a phone that takes pictures and has a microphone, you can download Evernote to your phone. You will be able to use those things that are lacking on the Nook to full advantage by syncing with your phone.
Maybe one day B&N will come out with a new Nook Color that will include a camera and a microphone. Those additions would be great enhancements. You would then have a device that would compete quite nicely with the iPad, and more than likely at a much cheaper price.
One thing that also makes Evernote a good selection, is that it's free. There are some limitiations in the free application as far as the amount of data that you are allowed to upload each month, but for my use the free version will work out just fine. The premium version will cost you $5 a month. If you aren't going to upload more than 60mb per month the free edition is sufficient. Since I'm just doing lists and no photos, I don't even come close to the limit.
Ease of Use = 5 stars, Compatibility with other devices = 5 stars, functionality with the Nook Color = 3 stars. Overall rating for the Nook Color = 4 stars. I can see a lot of possibilities with this application, but for the Nook Color they aren't quite there yet, and this is not the fault of Evernote.

Post a CommentGreat work on this. From your comments about B&N with the Nook and my experience with Amazon & the Kindle, I suspect they need to fine tune their products before they'll really be as good as they can be.
Great information
An outstanding product review. Thanks!
Good review, Pat. I've been thinking about a Nook. Just not sure if I'd like not holding a real book in my hands. :)
