A Review on Fashion Designer Giles Deacon

Avant-garde Designer Giles Deacon is Making Wearable Clothing for a Change

ShawnTe Pierce
British fashion designer Giles Deacon has been around since his debut in 2004. He has paid his dues at Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Bottega Venetta so this chap has sharpened his shears with the best. This designer is known for his whimsical designs that were always better suited for print than for adorning the human form. One could say Giles Deacon provided the fashion version of "eye candy". However, spring 2010 has seen some commercial growth with this hot designer. He not only has given us something to look at, but now something we can wear.

Giles Deacon has not Forsaken Color

Giles Deacon has maintained his avant-garde style and did not abandon his friend, color. Unlike many of the spring 2010 collections, Deacon has used color that fits the season. Clothes in bright almost neon oranges, yellows, turquoise, and metallics made it feel like spring again on the runway.

Young and Hip Accessories

Clean faces with neon orange tinged eyes and hair donned the models sashaying down the runway. Cute, whimsical elephant handbags accessorized the clothes without looking out of place. I am still amazed at how he managed to make an elephant hand bag look fantastic. Crazy looking, large sunglasses that did not overpower the face and actually paired nicely with a suit were a hit at the show.

Giles Deacon and the Fifth Element

Giles pulled off what in theory would seem impossible: a B-movie futuristic collection that is wearable. The clothes ranged from costumes that looked like they belonged in the James Cameron film The Fifth Element to something a Marvel Comics heroine would wear. Yet as far fetched as these images seem written out, when translated into a 3-D garment, I can see young girls going to a dance, party or mall walking in these clothes. Oddly enough my favorite piece has to be his superhero mini dress worn by model Irina Kulikova with the lemon yellow tutu like mini dress worn by one of my favorite supermodels Kirsty Hume.

Giles Deacon is one designer not to be slept on. If you have teenage daughters you may hear his name pretty soon if he continues to make his youth friendly clothes wearable as he has done for spring 2010. Don't be surprised if you see bright or metallic elephant handbags on the street. I think this is going to be a hit with tweens and teens alike. Wearable would be nice...I have to laugh at most Runway shows...it's the stuff of sci-fi movies. On Project Runway, the stuff I consider very wearable usually gets the designer in the bottom 3!
