A Review of Faygo and Big K Soda Pop

Johanna Swith
I was shopping in my local Kroger store for groceries when I stumbled down the soda pop aisle. I needed to purchase several varieties of diet soda pop as well as regular soda pop for an upcoming family reunion. I offered to cover the beverages to avoid cooking... I found so many choices and brands I was not sure what to get for such a large crowd. Everyone likes something different in my family, so I ended up purchasing two liter bottles of soda pop in an assortment of flavors I had heard of, and several I had never heard of. In this multiple product review I wish to share my families experiences with the soda pop we drank at our family reunion. I will focus on the lesser known brands and flavors.

I will begin with Faygo pop. This is an affordable soda pop, and it tastes great too. I admit I was drawn to the Faygo pop products because they cost around one dollar per bottle, and they are three liter bottles instead of the standard two liter bottle. For a large crowd, it was simply cost effective to get the bigger bottles for fifty cents per bottle less than the national brands, such as Pepsi and Coke. I picked up Faygo pop three liters in Moon Mist, O'hana Punch, Cola, Diet Cola, Diet Orange, Orange, Grape and Diet Grape, as well as Diet Red Pop. Combined with iced tea, lemonade and water I had plenty of drinks for the entire family. Everyone really loved the Faygo pop, and there were no complaints as I expected. I honestly thought someone would say something like " What no Mountain Dew?" Faygo is cheap, it tastes great and there are many flavors to chose from including unique flavors like Clown Cola and Chocolate pop, in addition to the standard flavors.

I also purchased five two liters of Big K brand soda pop, which is made by the Kroger company. Big K is inexpensive and just as good as the national favorites such as Pepsi and Coca Cola. I found the selection to be quite impressive, and the price was impressive also. I purchased Big K two liters for around seventy five cents each, and I was impressed with the the product. Big K soda pop is half the price of the national brands of soda pop and tastes just as great as Pepsi, and other well known soda pop products.

to Ptorq...Firstly, be sure you're not drinking some other brand also called Big K for your region. If you're speaking of the Kroger brand of Big K cola thenI have a challenge for you. If you think the Kroger Big K brand is not as good as Coke or Pepsi then do a blind taste test. Be sure to buy brand new bottles of the drink when you do it as they flatten quickly. So don't use a Coke that's been opened a day or so vs. a new Big K or vice versa.

I work with a friend who swore to high heaven he could INSTANTLY tell a difference between the Kroger Big K cola vs. Coca-Cola. I bought one of each and me and some co-workers poured equal amounts of Coke into one cup and Big K into the other.

He guessed that the Big K soda was COKE twice and then said, "well let's put some ice into it this time. I think that's probably the problem...these aren't cold enough."

So we put 4 cubes of ice into each cup and poured two fresh cups. He chose Big K yet again. So three times in a row he chose the Big K product as being the Coke product. But he knows his Coke!

So then another co-worker said he was positive that he would know a difference as he watched us mock our resident Coke expert.

He too chose the Big K as the Coke product and we laughed all the more.

Remember, though, you should do it several times because it's a 50% shot that you'll get it right anyhow. The point is that some sodas definitely have a significant taste difference but not all do. I wonder if Coke merely puts the Big K labels onto the Kroger brand and sells it to them. I'm not so sure Kroger runs a manufacturing plant for sodas but I could be wrong. If not then they have done a WONDERFUL job of mimicking the Coke product.

So much of the "those other brands don't taste as good" crowd are basically suckered by lifelong marketing. I can "usually" tell a difference between Pepsi and Coke as Pepsi comes off "sweeter" to me but when I compare Big K to Coke in a blind test I can't tell the difference in the least.

The blind taste tests without that big red or blue Coke or Pepsi label staring you in the face will tell the tale. And this obviously goes for other products as well.

Nice article, Johanna Swith, and thanks for sharing!

So all you people be wary out there and KNOW THY SELF. All of us are victims of wonderful marketing and those flashy colors that we've all known and loved for years. Some people swear by bottled waters and the vast majority of them are simply water from a municipal source.

I don't drink diet, so this excludes any comparison of diet versions. Big K makes good clones of popular name brands. If you're saying, Big K Cola doesn't taste exactly like Coke or Pepsi's version of a cola, I agree. However, to say that the Big K version is "bad" is just plain wrong. I would say it's similar to acclimating yourself to diet instead of regular pops, if you only drink 1 can and stop because it's "totally different", then you haven't given sufficient tries to actually begin to get that "indeed it is different BUT that's ok". At the same price, I would buy the brand names. If it comes to saving $3 a case for Big K compared to Coke or Pepsi, I'll take the "it's different" all day long and enjoy what are really just fine soda beverages!

If you like Big K then great for you, but I don't think Big K cola (the only flavor I've tried so far) is anywhere near as good as Pepsi, let alone Coke. I got it on sale for about 15 cents a can, and even at that price I wouldn't buy it again.

Ralph's in California appears to be phasing out Shasta in favor of Big K, which means I'll be shopping elsewhere for my cheap cola from now on.
