A Review of Generic Ground Coffee

Johanna Swith
With our economic struggles it is not uncommon for people to try to save a few dollars however it is possible. For many Americans that often equates to purchasing generic versions of the products we normally purchase. Often it is possible to buy a generic or store brand product and find yourself surprised with the quality of the product. I have been purchasing a lot of generic brands in the last few months, and some have left me thrilled, while others left me disappointed. In this multi product review focusing on coffee I will share my opinions about off brand coffees to help consumers save some of their hard earned cash while at the grocery store.

My mom always turns her nose up when I offer her a cup of coffee, as she puts it "Oh no, none of that rot gut brew for me!" She can't fathom that I have completely washed my hands of Folgers. I refuse to spend nine dollars for a can of coffee, that is simply ridiculous! I discovered the Master Chef blend at Wal-Mart. For less than four dollars you get a can that is the same size as Folgers, and the quality is equally as impressive. Little do most people realize Master Chef is made by the well known company, Sara Lee. In my opinion this is one of the best coffee products available on the market. At less than half the price of Folgers, this is a great buy, and a great tasting cup of coffee. Master Chef is a keeper! It is also more affordable than the nastiest coffee out there, Chase and Sanborn. I recommend that everyone try this Wal-Mart special out, you won't be disappointed!

Sometimes I enjoy a gourmet blend of coffee, which lead me to the Kroger Private Selection line of coffee. The blend I tried was really rank, and I will never even try the other flavors. I ended up with Chocolate Raspberry ground coffee, as I enjoy both flavors. Drinking the Kroger Private Selection ground coffee in Chocolate Raspberry made my stomach hurt! It is simply disgusting. I would not recommend this coffee to anyone, regardless of how thrifty you want to be. Chances are, you will be disappointed by this brew, as it is really gross. I give this coffee two thumbs down.

Finally The FMV, or for maximum value blend of coffee made by Kroger is a fine alternative to the national brands of high priced coffee. For about two dollars and fifty cents per twelve ounce can, this is not only affordable, but also pretty tasty. If I don't feel like making a trip into Wal-Mart for my beloved Master Chef blend I will settle for FMV by Kroger coffee any day.
