A Review of the Great Value: Southwest Style Chicken & Pasta

Jacob Horn
I am a man who does not know how to cook anything. I can follow directions and put things in an oven if it is not to difficult. I am trying to take more responsibility for meals here at home to make things easier on my wife. I also want to learn how to cook so I am going to start with baby steps. Last night I did pasta and toast. In the future I am going to try and do quick reviews and give ideas for simple meals to help guys and girls like me.

The pasta I made last night was Southwest Style Chicken and Pasta from Great Value. All you have to do is pull it out of the box and put it in the oven on a baking sheet. You heat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and cook it for 45-50 minutes. I purchased it at a Walmart in Tennessee for $6.00. The pasta is made up of grilled white chicken and penne pasta. It is covered in a zesty cheese sauce that is topped with cheddar cheese. Crushed tortilla chips are also mixed in. My wife and I both loved it. The box says that it has 4 servings but it can be easily devoured by two hungry people. Each serving has 410 calories and 22 grams of fat. Each serving does have 40% of your daily calcium plus 15% of your Vitamin A.

The toast we had with the meal was Pepperidge Farm: Texas Toast (Garlic). It takes 5-6 minutes in a conventional oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit. It comes with 8 slices and they are already sliced. You simply place them on a baking sheet. Each slice has 140 calories and 7 fat grams. Each slice also has 15 grams of carbs plus 3 grams of protein. This was also purchased at a Walmart in Tennessee for $1.78. This bread was so good I could have eaten all 8 slices in 2 minutes. Very, very good.

This meal was absolutely delicious and it can be done by a novice. I mean I did it. Total preparation takes a little less than an hour. The hardest part is making sure you set the timer. The total cost of the meal is just north of $8.00. For someone like me who is an expert in pouring a bowl a cereal, my wife was pleasantly surprised to see a halfway decent meal when she got home.
