A Review of Hamburger Helper Philly Cheese Steak

Amanda Roddy
I usually make Hamburger Helper at least twice a month. It is easy to prepare and provides more than enough food for two people. There is enough left over for the next day which saves time cooking. Eating the same thing gets tiresome so I am always on the lookout for new flavors of Hamburger Helper. A while back, someone mentioned trying Hamburger Helper Philly Cheese Steak so I decided to make this for myself. If it tastes anything like a cheese steak sandwich, it had to be good. At least, this would be something different.

Hamburger helper Philly Cheese Steak can be purchased for around $1.75 to $2.25 for a 6.5 oz box. Hamburger helper Philly Cheese Steak comes with noodles, sauce mix, and French onion topping. To prepare, you need a pound of ground beef or turkey and milk. I always buy a little more than a pound of beef to stretch it. Brown the ground beef and drain. Add ¼ of milk, sauce mix, 1 ¼ cups of hot water, and noodles. Heat the mixture until boiling. Reduce heat and simmer. The sauce will thicken upon standing.

Hamburger helper Philly Cheese Steak is part of the Cheesy Favorites collection. Actually, I did not think it tasted too cheesy. I added extra slices of cheese. You can also add diced onions, tomatoes, green peppers, and mushrooms to improve the flavor. You can top it with sour cream and extra French fried onions for additional crisp. The curly noodles give Hamburger Helper Philly Cheese steak texture. They are tender if cooked properly. The over-all flavor depends on the quality of meat.

Hamburger Helper is not popular for being healthy and Philly Cheese Steak is no exception. Cholesterol count is 55 grams or 18 PDV. Hamburger Helper Philly Cheese Steak has 27 grams of carbohydrates and 720 milligrams of sodium. These numbers are high for anyone watching their carbohydrates, sodium, or cholesterol. You can reduce the fat by substituting ground turkey in place of ground beef and using skim milk.

You get the benefits of 21grams of protein and 300 mg of potassium. Hamburger Helper Philly Cheese Steak has 20% PDV for niacin, 15 &PDV for folic acid, riboflavin, and thiamin. It is made from enriched wheat pasta, soy flour, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, yeast extract, eggs, ricotta cheese, onion, garlic, salt, flour, and milk fat. This meal contains soy, wheat, and egg ingredients.

I do not recommend eating Hamburger Helper Philly Cheese Steak on a regular basis because of the high fat content. However, it does fill me up after a serving or two. Add a salad for a more balanced meal. On a scale of one to ten, I give Hamburger Philly Cheese Steak a seven.
