A Review of the High Powered Canon Powershot SX110IS Digital Camera

A Point and Shoot that Approaches the Versatility of a DSLR

JW Price
It would seem as though Canon took a step back and asked what is it consumers would like to see improved on their point and shoot digital cameras, and decided that is was more zoom. They have decided to take that advice and roll out several point and shoots boasting a zoom well above industry standards. One such model is the Canon Powershot SX110IS. This camera comes complete with a 10 times optical zoom in a relatively small package. Because of aggressive pricing this holiday season and the robust zoom the SX110IS has consistently been featured as one of Amazon's best selling electronics. Because of its popularity this seasons I have decided to spend some time with one of these cameras and let you know just how well it performs.

Product Overview:

For a camera with such a large zoom it has fantastic exterior styling. It has some color options but the one I have is black with silver accents. The overall style of the Canon Powershot SX110IS looks as if a pocket sized point and shoot and a DSLR mated. Unlike some of Canon's other long zooming point and shoots this model is considerably lighter and more compact. While it isn't paper thin it will fit in a purse or a coat pocket and won't require a camera bag. The 3 inch screen takes up plenty of space on the rear side of this camera with the menu accessible via controls on the right hand side. There wasn't enough room on the rear to add a view finder though which detracts a little for me considering the large zoom and otherwise available options.

There are a number of features on this camera as well as easy to access shooting modes. Most casual users will be fine using the preset shooting modes but there are ISO options etc. available for those that really like fine tune their picture quality. Also this camera uses standard AA batteries. I found that while there were some advantages to this set up there are quite a few disadvantages. Regular AA batteries tend to rapidly deplete so I recommend investing in some rechargeables in order to save some money.

Image quality is great on this 9 megapixel camera especially in well lit settings. Night time shots also impressed me with very little in the way of noise. Taking action shots was also a breeze thanks to Canon's motion detection technology. I was able to take fast paced basketball shots with very little blurring in the photo. I found that most other camera's in this price range fail to adequately reduce motion blur.

Product Overview:

This is perhaps the most well rounded digital camera I've been able to get my hands on. I would recommend this product to just about any consumer interested in a camera. Unless you want something super slim then this camera is likely to meet and surpass all of your point and shoot needs.
