What Not To Wear has two main hosts, Clinton Kelly and Stacy London. Clinton and Stacey are fashion experts. The beginning of each show starts after a new fashion victim has been chosen. Usually, it is someone who just has no sense of style or is stuck in a style that should have ended years ago. Prior to the show, a few camera people get some candid footage of the victim wearing their everyday wardrobe. Sometimes the "secret footage" will show the victim answering questions about their style, or lack of, for a fake interview.
A second part of the secret footage involves the victim's friends and family going through the victim's wardrobe and finding all of the humiliating and tacky items they have. Next, it is time for the victim to find out that they are on the show. Stacy and Clinton will usually surprise the person at work or another public place.
Once the person has been surprised friends and family pop up. Now it is time to publicly display the "secret footage", usually at the dismay of the fashion victim. Once the person has been thoroughly embarrassed it is time for the proposal. Clinton and Stacy will give the person a $5000 VISA gift card and the opportunity to spend it in New York. However, the only way they will get this is if they agree to hand their entire wardrobe over to Clinton and Stacy. Of course, they say yes and everyone gets excited.
Once in New York the person will lay out their entire wardrobe. They will be asked to try a few outfits on and stand inside of the "360 degree mirrors". These mirrors show every angle of the person, and in many cases, make them realize just how unflattering the outfit really is. After the person gets embarrassed all over again, Clinton and Stacy proceed to throw all of their clothes in the garbage. Now, the only clothing they have is what they are wearing.
Clinton and Stacy provide the person with a few "rules" before they are let out into the city to buy a new wardrobe. Usually, the person hates the rules that are demonstrated with three mannequins that have proper outfits on. Polaroids are given to the person so that they can remember what Clinton and Stacy told them to get. Now it is time to shop.
The person is given two days to shop and spend the $5000. The first day, the person goes out on their own. Usually they go to stores that Clinton and Stacy have recommended. This is where it gets interesting. Usually they don't want to follow the rules. It is interesting to see what they buy and try on. The second day Clinton and Stacy review all of the purchases of the previous day and shop with the person to help them out. This is where a lot of advice comes in and viewers can pick up some fashion tips.
Once all of the shopping is over the person goes to a salon, where they will get their hair done by Nick. He always does a wonderful job and the hairstyles always seem to fit the person perfectly. Then Carmindy will show the women how to do their make up quickly. She will usually show them two different styles that are pretty east and quick to do. Once all of this is over it is time for the reveal. Clinton and Stacy will get to see how their protégée looks, then they will go home and show their family and friends their new look. It is amazing to see how different these people look at the end of the show.
