A Review of the Incredible Sham Wow

R. M. Dubuc
Anyone who has stayed up late enough has most likely seen the ads on television for the registered Sham Wow, an alleged miracle cleaner product. The Sham Wow promises out-of-this world absorbancy when cleaning spills of every kind.

On a local mall trip, I discovered a Sham Wow booth. The salesperson was giving a live demonstration, so I decided to watch. Admittedly, the Sham Wow advertisements on television had made me curious and I wondered if the Sham Wow could really suck the juice out of the bottom of the rug or clean up a major kitchen spill with a few swipes of the cloth.

The Sham Wow is sold in sheets, approximately 18 by 24 inches. The orange sheets can be cut into smaller pieces or used whole for larger spills and clean-ups. The sheets resemble orange pieces of felt and are about as thick.

The Live Demonstration

The live demonstration of Sham Wow included pouring a large spill of generic diet soda onto the demonstration table. The salesperson set the Sham Wow on the spill, picked it up and wringed it out once, and then placed it back over the large spill. She patted it down once at the end and the table was cleared of any sign of diet soda spills.

More diet soda was poured, this time on a small swatch of rug sample. I could see how liquid spills go down through rugs from this demonstration. The Sham Wow seemed to be able to absorb all the spilled liquid.

I was glad to be able to see the Sham Wow in action, but still not sure if the Sham Wow could solve all my spill issues at home. The salesperson offered a few different package deals, and ultimately offered me a sample to take home. Over the past few weeks, I have put the Sham Wow to the test.

Putting the Sham Wow to the Test

The best place to test the Sham Wow was at home, away from any sensationalized product demonstrations. I used the Sham Wow in the kitchen, for cleaning up everyday spills and wiping down the counters. The Sham Wow was also able to take a wash in my dishwasher to keep it clean. It was easy to clean smaller spills with one or two wipes, but larger ones required the wringing and rinsing I usually have to do with my kitchen sponges.

The Sham Wow did work. It absorbed spills, and it was handy to have in the kitchen. The larger sheets would be best for bigger spills, though. After a few weeks my sample Sham Wow looked a bit worn, though it still held up.

I am not sure what the secret material is in the Sham Wow but it works for the purpose of cleaning up spills. Though I am not convinced that I need 8 sheets of Sham Wow, as sold in some of the packages for $27.99 at the local Sham Wow booth at the mall, I do use my sample.

Sham Wow has an official website for more information, www.shamwow.com, and if you get the chance to see a live demonstration at your local mall, I encourage it. As a spill absorber the Sham Wow is good, not perfect, but then again, most miracle products rarely are.

I've always wondered if that thing worked or not. That said, is it really worth the cost? Paper towels aren't that expensive...and everyone has bath towels that are perfectly washable if the spill is too huge for paper towels to handle it.

One of the local DJ's is putting his support behind it and saying he's seen amazing video on YouTube of what it can do. I still don't like the guy selling it on the commercial but I might get some for the kitchen!

I had Sham Wow and wasn't impressed. It wore out too quickly and lost that brand new absorbency. Excellent review, though.
