A Review of Ingrid Michaelson's New Album

Halle Larabie
I can consider myself an Ingrid Michaelson fan, I have all her past albums and I have listened to them a good amount. And ever since I heard the fantastic single "Maybe", I have been waiting for the new one quite impatiently. I certainly hold her in a higher regard over her singer-songwriter contemporaries such as Colbie Caillat and Sara Bareilles. And while I've always enjoyed Michaelson's sensitive songwriting style, as with most of the more popular singer-songwriter nowadays, they always seem to dwell on matters of the heart when it comes to writing their songs. It makes you miss the days when more politically and socially sensitive writers such as Jewel and Tori Amos were ruling the airwaves.

The opening track, Soldier opens the love theme with the lyrics "the battle of the heart is not easily won" and it continues on to the second track with "everybody wants to be loved" - it goes on for the rest of the album. Even the more introspective and melancholy tracks such as "Are We There Yet" and "So Long" still deals with love issues such as looking for love and being heartbroken.

But overall, this is a good album. If you're looking for a laid-back romantic album to listen to with your mate, this one is for you. With all the political and social issues that you see every time you turn on the news, maybe it's actually a good thing to not hear about it when you turn on your iPod.

Stand-out tracks for me are: Maybe, Soldier, Mountain And The Sea.

Rating: 4 stars.
