A Review of the Java Chiller from Sonic Drive-In

During a break in the recent Tropical Storm Lee, Janet and I had had about enough of the indoor life, and so we both decided some ice cream sounded good. After a bit of decision-making we agreed the local Sonic Drive-In (at 1129 North Pine Street, DeRidder, Louisiana, 70634) was about as good of a place to go as any, so off we went.

We both knew we wanted ice cream, but which one? Decisions...decisions. That's when we noticed a product we'd never seen before: The Java Chiller! The regular size was $2.99, and the large was only $3.29 The flavor options were caramel, mocha or hazelnut. The menu also mentioned something about "any combination of flavors" also being available, but let's keep it simple for now, right?

So, we each picked the large caramel Java Chiller to try, and in just a minute or two, our friendly car-hop came out with our order. (I've always had a lot of respect for those folks who can work a long, hard day in such a busy industry, and still offer a friendly smile.) We got our drinks, she took the money, and with a friendly "Thank you. Enjoy!," she was off to run orders to other customers. (As a side note, the manager of this particular Sonic Drive-In runs a fantastic little place. The food here is always excellent. The prices are as reasonable as you might hope for. And the crew is always as courteous as the weather will let them be.)

Let me tell you what - these drinks are about as good as any sort of iced coffee could get. Simply put, they're a sort of iced coffee float, with a mound of whipped cream, and plenty of caramel on top. Caffeine, sugar and dairy product addicts finally have that rare common ground. In a word: Narm! Very, very narm. If you have any sort of sugar sensitivity, diabetes or if you're just trying to lose weight, you might want to have some other beverage, but otherwise, the Java Chiller from Sonic Drive-In is a hit. Try one yourself, and tell us what you think in the comments below.

#$%$ is Narm?? Anyhow, excellent (and entertaining) review. I don't much care for cold coffee beverages, but the caramel sounds like one I might be tempted to try! Good choice.

Sounds yum! Lee should pass our way by Wednesday (but they're calling for rain from now til then and beyond). That sounds like a beautiful thing, and there's a Sonic in Fayetteville, TN too...my only problem is getting there!
