A Review of Katz's Express New York Deli

Katz's Deli and Bar in Houston, TX (and Katz's Express in Conroe, TX) brings a little bit of New York to the Lone Star State and for those of us from the northeast, that's a good thing. My husband took me and my dog to Katz's Express for lunch on our way to the Sam Houston National Forest on Mother's Day. Katz's Express is dog-friendly so they allowed our dog to sit with us on the patio area; and fortunately for me, the outside tables were covered with umbrellas. Katz's Express in the Portofino Shopping Center in Conroe, TX was just what this New York gal needed on her way to a walk in the woods.

I'm pretty sure it took me just as long to decide what to order as it did for me to actually eat my lunch. The menu is vast and everything looked good. I opted for something simple: tuna salad on a toasted plain bagel, and a side order of a potato knish. While waiting for our food to be delivered to our table, my husband got us some pickles. They were not the sour pickles that I like from the Jewish New York style deli but it was better than nothing and Katz's Deli does not try to pretend a Jewish deli, it is simply a New York style deli in Texas.

The Food
Tuna salad seems easy to make but very few actually do it well, and I'm pleased to report that Katz's Express in Texas did an amazing job with my simple sandwich. The tuna was not fishy, and it contained just enough bits and pieces (of celery and other ingredients) to keep it interesting yet not overwhelming. The amount of mayonnaise used was just right as well. The sandwich was large so unfortunately I could not finish it since I ordered the potato knish as well.

The potato knish was just like I remembered from the deli restaurants in the New York/New Jersey area. I'm pretty sure it had a hint of chopped onion which made it just a tad sweet. The knish was large so unfortunately I could not eat it all but I wish I could because it was delicious.

My husband had the foot long hot dog and ate just about all of it in addition to his onion rings.

Katz's Express in Conroe, TX has everything one would expect from a New York deli like the Reuben sandwich, matzo ball soup, and potato pancakes. Katz's even had Dr. Brown's soda which is a staple in a New York deli.
