A Review of Los Poblanos Inn in Albuquerque, New Mexico

A Lavender Farm and Cultural Center

Bobbi Leder
Los Poblanos Inn in Albuquerque, New Mexico is a little slice of heaven for nature and animal lovers. Los Poblanos is set on 25 acres of lavender fields, produce gardens, sunflowers, lily ponds, and even a farm with chickens, ducks, geese, a cow, goats, and pigs. In addition to their beautiful and romantic grounds, Los Poblanos in Albuquerque, New Mexico is also a historic property that is reminiscent of a charming English B&B. What few people know about Los Poblanos is that John Gaw Meem (aka the creator of the Santa Fe style) is the architect who first designed the inn. And as such, each guest room has a kiva fireplace, hardwood floors, carved ceiling beams and antique New Mexican furnishings.

Guests staying at Los Poblanos Inn in Albuquerque, New Mexico are able to enjoy the lush grounds by walking or riding a bike (which is provided free of charge). We actually took the bikes off of the grounds and rode along the river. My bike had a detachable basket which would have been perfect for carrying my cell phone and camera. Nancy, the inn keeper, is kind helpful and sweet. Her boyfriend runs the farm shop and is extremely knowledgeable about both Los Poblanos and New Mexico in general - particularly architecture which is in his background.

We swung on the wooden porch swing while admiring the views of the mountains above the garden and had a snack (cheese and crackers) when we first arrived. Nancy calls this Happy Hour but we called it a relaxing break after driving from Santa Fe, New Mexico. We also had an opportunity to feed the goats - my favorite part of our New Mexico trip - and visit the farm shop. The farm shop sells books, homemade biscotti, and other items in addition to their lavender products like shampoo, condition, hand wash, soap, and hand lotion.

The one negative about our stay in the hacienda style room was the ancient air conditioning. It was too old to keep up with the heat wave New Mexico was experiencing during our July stay. We opened the windows instead but unfortunately it was very humid outside which is not the norm for Albuquerque, New Mexico. The bathroom was quaint but had a step down so wasn't the safest design for those who use the lavatory in the middle of the night. The good news is that Los Poblanos Inn in Albuquerque, New Mexico is in the process of adding 10 new guest rooms.

The breakfast was served outdoors where everyone could enjoy the patio which has plants, flowers and a water feature. The breakfast was home cooked and delicious. We had an egg crepe - something unique - with cheese and freshly picked vegetables and chives. It was so filling that I couldn't be tempted to try the chocolate chip biscotti while visiting the farm shop.

Staying at Los Poblanos in Albuquerque, New Mexico was the perfect way to end our vacation. It is conveniently located within five minutes of Old Town by car and is also close to the university area as well as downtown and Nob Hill.

Events like weddings are held at Los Poblanos on a regular basis and after staying there and admiring the grounds, I can see why.

There is no better place to stay than Los Poblanos Inn if you're planning a visit to Albuquerque, New Mexico. To learn more or to make a reservation, visit their web site at www.lospoblanos.com. They are located at 4803 Rio Grande Boulevard NW, Albuquerque, NM, 87107.
