Sometimes consumers have a hard time finding low cost finding low cost flat panel televisions from name brand manufacturers. This isn't the case with Philip's new line of high definition televisions. Competitively priced, Philips is bringing their name recognition and high quality service to the budget flat panel television market. A model that exemplifies this is the new Philips 47" LCD HDTV model 47PFL5603D. This full HD 1080p display is giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy a quality home theater experience regardless of income level. I have taken the opportunity to spend a good deal of time with the Philips 47PFL5603D and I'm going to outline just how well it performs.

Product Overview:

This offering from Philips has a real refined appearance. With a glossy black bezel coated with a clear glossy plastic the 47PFL5603D really stands out from the crowd. The smaller sized base that comes included is surprisingly sturdy despite its reduced foot print. Most will like that the base is a smaller size, allowing versatility among the types of television furniture needed. The overall bulk of the television is quite small compared to a lot of other inexpensive big screens currently on the market.

The display is above average and produces a true HD 1080p resolution. I found that the viewing angle was very good and no fading was noticed. I also have my television in a very bright living room I found that the 47PFL5603D performed well with its very bright backlight and glare reducing matte like screen finish. I had no trouble viewing 1080p Bluray movies on by mating it with me Playstation 3 via HDMI. There was a slight bit of motion blur while playing games and watching basketball, though it wasn't any more than average. The sound quality produced from the built in speakers was decent but I found that to get the total theater like experience I only need to hook it into my preexisting surround sound setup. The black levels were average for the price range and would expect most consumers to agree, especially once it's gracing their living room.

The connectivity is average for a display of this size. It boasts 4 HDMI inputs as well as component an composite inputs. I was able to connect my laptop without issue via the included S-Video port. I didn't feel that it made a great big screen monitor though and feels it's better suited performing its intended function as a television.

Product Value:

Currently priced at just under $1200 I feel that for its size it really is a good deal. You would be hard pressed to cover that much real estate for much less than that, and you certainly wouldn't be doing it with a household name like Philips.
