A Review of Marie Callender's Sesame Chicken

Lisa Riggs
My husband and I are great fans of the Healthy Choice line of frozen dinners. When the kids are in the mood for something we just don't want, or the time to prepare an elaborate meal is just not in the cards, we often reach for those quick and easy dinners. While on a recent shopping trip to stock up on our favorites, we spied Marie Callender's Sesame Chicken frozen dinner. This meal was priced at only two dollars and fifty cents and certainly looked very appetizing. We decided to pick up a few and give them a try. Here is what we discovered about this product.

This frozen microwave meal is packaged in a ten point twenty five ounce easy steam bowl. Preparation of this meal is extremely easy. After removing the bowl from the outer packaging, it gets placed in the microwave. The timer should be set for three and a half minutes to four and a half minutes, depending on how hot your microwave runs and how closely you need to follow food manufacturer's' estimated cooking times. When the meal is sufficiently heated, it gets removed from the oven and allowed to sit for a minute or two. The film that covers the top should be removed carefully. The steamer basket then gets removed from the outer sauce bowl. The delicious food inside the basket then gets mixed thoroughly into the sauce bowl so that the food is evenly coated with the sesame sauce.

Each Marie Callender's Sesame Chicken meal contains four hundred calories. There is twelve grams of Fat, with two grams of Saturated Fat per dish. There is thirty milligrams of Cholesterol, seven hundred and ten milligrams of Sodium and four hundred and fifty milligrams of Potassium per serving. There is also fifty four grams of Total Carbohydrate, five grams of Dietary Fiber and twenty two grams of Sugar. On the positive side, there is eighteen grams of Protein, thirty five percent of Vitamin A, fifty percent of Vitamin E, ten percent of Iron and fifteen percent of Magnesium. There is also a nice offering of other vitamins and minerals including Vitamin B12, Niacin, Folic Acid and others.

When I first tasted this microwave meal, I was extremely impressed. This Sesame Chicken meal contains a wonderful amount of white meat chicken, linguine pasta, carrots, water chestnuts and scallions liberally coated with a very tasty sweet sesame sauce. This meal was very filling and had enough different items in the mix to make it a very interesting dish. The sauce was quite delicious and really added a nice element to the meal. Overall, I would give this microwave dinner a four star rating. While I loved the taste, and the price was very affordable, the high Sodium content makes this one frozen dinner I would enjoy on only an occasional basis.
