I've tried a few tofu products that just don't seem to cut it for me, but I have been especially fond of Marjon Tofu Crumbles. Marjon Tofu Crumbles resemble something close to ground beef, and the taste is remarkably satisfying. The package states the tofu crumbles are cholesterol free and is precooked with a mild seasoning. That's a definite advantage over most ground beef - which, normally, isn't packaged precooked!
Using Marjon Tofu Crumbles in a Meal
I decided to try incorporating Marjon Tofu Crumbles in a taco dinner. I must confess, I've never had tofu tacos before, so this was a big first for me. I prepared the tofu crumbles just as I would prepare ground beef in this situation.
I dropped some canola oil into a frying pan, placed the tofu crumbles in, and cooked the product for around 10 to 15 minutes over medium heat, constantly flipping and moving the tofu around so that it wouldn't burn.
Once the tofu was thoroughly heated, I added some taco seasoning into the tofu crumbles after pouring 2/3 cup of water into the pan.
Out came tofu taco filling hot and ready to eat!
Of course, I could've prepared any number of "beef meals" using the tofu crumbles - hamburgers, sloppy joes, meatloaf, and stuffed potatoes or stuffed peppers to name a few. The bottom line is that, given this product is a true vegetarian staple (and, thus, devoid of any meat!), I have become very satisfied with the idea of using Marjon Tofu Crumbles for future meals.
Marjon Tofu Crumbles: Healthier and Less Expensive than Lean Ground Beef
Marjon Tofu Crumbles contain only 55 calories and 3 grams of fat per 2-1/2-ounce serving. It also packs 6 grams of protein and 9% of one's typical daily iron needs, which is pretty impressive.
It cost me $2.79 at my local Florida grocer to purchase a 10-ounce pack of Marjon Tofu Crumbles. Comparing that price to a lean-quality pack of ground beef, I actually saved around 50 cents to $1 per pound buying the tofu instead of the ground beef!
While I am not saying goodbye to my ground beef hamburgers, I am saying hello to a new alternative that is healthier, a tad cheaper, and will provide me a clean respite from red meat every now and then.
