Frozen Dessert that is a Notch Above the Rest

Menchie's Frozen Yogurt has come to The Houston Heights, TX and the locals couldn't be happier. Houston has no shortage of frozen yogurt and ice creameries but Menchie's is different; Menchie's stands above the rest with that little something extra. Maybe it's the pink decor (that always puts me in a good mood) or maybe it's the sturdy, colorful plastic spoons that are reusable, or maybe it's the quality and variety of their yogurt and toppings.

Menchie's is now a chain thanks to franchising but it didn't start off that way. No, it started with Danna and Adam Caldwell who decided to open a frozen yogurt store in Encino, California and make it the best one around. Today all of the franchises share the same principles: community, outstanding service, healthy living and the pursuit of the perfect yogurt mix.

The Yogurt

The frozen yogurt at Menchie's contains live and active cultures, and the yogurt is low in fat and high in calcium. It's the perfect snack. Menchie's has a little bit of everything for everyone, so don't worry if you're on a special diet. In addition to sorbet, Menchie's also has sugar-free, low-carb and non-fat yogurt - and it's all Kosher.

Flavors

Menchie's changes their flavors daily but there is always a large variety of frozen yogurt and sorbet. Some of the flavors they carry are chocolate, vanilla, banana, strawberry, peanut butter, white chocolate mousse, cake batter, New York cheesecake, pumpkin, angel food cake, mango, and root beer float.

Toppings

You name it, they have it. Menchie's has just about every topping you could possible think of. Here is just a sample of hot and cold toppings they have available at Menchie's: hot fudge, caramel, strawberries, M&M's, non-fat granola, crushed Oreos, sprinkles, chocolate chips, peanut butter cups, Twix, carob chips, Fruity Pebbles, coconut flakes, cookie dough and nuts, My favorite is the peanut butter chips. I could fill up a cup of toppings alone.

How it Works

At Menchie's you serve yourself. You walk in, take a small sample cup and try every flavor for free (okay, I try every flavor but you don't have to). You fill your cup up as high as you want, and go over to the topping bar and go crazy - or is that just me? You don't have to have a topping but what fun is that? When you're done filling your cup, you place it on the scale at the cash register and pay by weight (of the cup, not you). The price is based on the weight of the cup so the more you have, the more you will pay.

How Much Can You Expect to Pay?

I had 7.8 ounces and they charge $0.43/ounce so I paid roughly $3.35 for mine. I had four different flavors with three different toppings. In my book, that's very reasonable.

What Does Menchie's Mean?

Mench is the Yiddish term for a good person or good man, but Adam thought it meant blessing so he began to call Danna menchie as a term of endearment. Thus when it came time to open their first frozen yogurt store, they decided to call it Menchie's, because to them, it was a blessing.

Reward Program

The first time you go to Menchie's you'll get a card for the "My Smileage" program. For every dollar you spend at Menchie's you will earn one smile. When you reach 50 smiles, you can redeem them and get five dollars off your next order. You can register your card on-line and earn an additional 25 smiles.

Merchandise

Menchie's has a plethora of merchandise you can buy as well. At the cashier you will see my favorite, the flavored lip balm, but they also carry T-shirts and accessories like hair clips.

Location

Menchie's in the Houston Heights is located at 512 W 19th Street (next to Urban Soles), Houston, TX, 77008. Their phone number is (713) 861-9600 and the website for Menchie's is Menchies.com.
