A Review of Namaste Nepal Restaurant in Boulder, Colorado

Pat Bartels
Namaste Nepal Restaurant is an example of how you can't judge a book by it's cover. This little restaurant is located in a strip mall next to Michaels Craft store at 4800 Baseline Road, Boulder, CO. Their daily hours are 11:30 am to 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm. They accept American Express, Discover, and Visa or Mastercard. They specialize in Nepali and Indian cuisine.

If you have never had this type of cuisine, like me, this is a good place to have your first experience. This restaurant is spotlessly clean, and the atmosphere is very pleasant with great service. Aside from the fact that the food was tasty, it's also healthy. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Namaste's has both a lunch and dinner buffet along with a menu that you can choose from. I tried their dinner buffet that was priced at $12.99. Namaste's lunch buffet costs $9.99 and it is not the same as the evening buffet. This particular evening, when I was at the restaurant, the buffet had basmati rice, lentil soup, tandori chicken, curry chicken and pork, different chutneys and sauces, vegetable pakora, fried okra, Aalu Tarkari (curry potatoes), salad, rice pudding, and Gulab Jamun (milk balls dipped in a light sugary syrup). The foods that I have listed are mostly what I sampled. There were many other things on the buffet that I haven't mentioned. I decided to try the buffet because it provided a variety of different foods for me to try.

I loved all the different sauces and chutneys. They were spicey and woke up my taste buds in a pleasant and unexpected way. The mint flavored Achaar was outstanding, and the mango chutney was absolutely yummy. These particular sauces and others are what makes the cuisine so interesting.

You might not even think about going into this restaurant because of it's location being in a strip mall. The exterior is a store front look and plain. When you step in the door, though, you are met with a greeting from the staff and an interior that is unexpected. I liked the tables being set with cloth napkins and oil candles on the tables. The interior colors were calming and, since they are some of my favorite colors, made me feel welcome.

I have read other reviews of this restaurant and the reviews talk about how this is a local treasure. It's off the beaten path, but is well worth the effort it might take to find it. This is exactly the type of restaurant that you want to find. A lot of the time these kinds of restaurant, where mostly the locals go to, are the best finds. I will definitely go back and try some of the other dishes. I have found this to be a wonderful cuisine and wish I had tried it before now.
